Poisons Taint New School Site
Arup SenGupta, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Lehigh and an international expert on arsenic pollution, was quoted in an article about land for a new elementary school in Seminole County that is poisoned with arsenic and other contaminants. School district officials say the property will be cleaned up and made safe for students. Safety of the site could not be immediately assured. Continued monitoring of groundwater, which local officials plan, will tell how much arsenic and other contaminants remain, he said. Should you send your child to school there? I do not have the answer, SenGupta said. A sign with a skull and crossbones and a stern warning about poisonous experimental chemicals now marks the site of the planned new Midway Elementary School in Sanford, which is scheduled to open in August 2006.

City Not Likely to Vote on Patriot Act
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about the controversial USA Patriot Act. While Bethlehem had been the first city in the Lehigh Valley to broach the issue, other local institutions have publicly denounced the Act. The faculties of Muhlenberg College and Lehigh University have passed similar resolutions. After finding no precedent for such an action in Bethlehem, City Council President Michael Schweder said council has reached a consensus not to vote tonight on a resolution opposing the controversial USA Patriot Act, the article said.
