Eight Students Invited to Governor’s Schools
Kevin Progar of Sheffield Area Middle/High School will be an alternate this summer at the School for Global Entrepreneurship at Lehigh University. Eight students and nine alternates were selected to participate in the 2004 Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools of Excellence. The schools are residential summer programs held on college campuses in eight fields. More than 3,600 students applied for the schools, and only about 800 were selected, based on artistic and academic merit.

Taking a Critical Look at Tort Reform
Carole Gorney, professor of Journalism and Communication at Lehigh University, wrote an article titled Taking a Critical Look at Tort Reform. Class-action lawsuits, which date back to 17th century England, developed in the United States as a way to secure uniformity of justice for plaintiffs with similar claims while also lessening the burden on crowded court dockets, the article said. The reality, however, is that the expected benefits of class actions got lost somewhere on the way to the courthouse.

Report Calls for Middle School Improvements
George White, Class of 1961 Professor and Program Coordinator in Educational Leadership at Lehigh, conducted research along with the Haverford Middle School Committee that identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the district’s secondary education program. The group passionately discussed highlights of the report on June 3. It revisits a 1997 study conducted by White and a team of educators. White, a middle school expert, examined the climate, culture, teaming, time utilization, and facilities at the school. The latest study expands on these areas and includes parent and student surveys and visits to three area middle schools. Recommendations include improving communication, parent involvement, and school pride.
