Lehigh University Faculty Joins Others in Condemning Patriot Act
The faculty at Lehigh University have passed a nonbinding resolution expressing concerns about the USA Patriot Act, becoming one of a handful of colleges and universities across the country to take such a stand on the controversial legislation. The resolution calls on the university's administration to avoid and prohibit discriminatory, illegal or improper investigation of people based on race and other characteristics. It also recommends that the school post signs in libraries and other places, telling people that the act may permit law enforcement to inspect or obtain records or personal information. This is an issue with a propensity to be very divisive, said Alwyn Eades, a professor of materials science and engineering at Lehigh. The drafters of the resolution did a wonderful job balancing the issues and producing a resolution that would merit wide support. The Patriot Act was passed shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and gives broader power to law enforcement to search homes, collect personal information, monitor e-mails and tap telephones. Supporters say it helps track down potential terrorists, but opponents say it violates civil liberties.

Jim Beam Donates Another $100,000 to The Michael Andretti Foundation to Help America “Drink Smart®”
Lehigh University was one of the universities chosen to receive funds last year from The Michael Andretti Foundation. The university was able to use the money in conjunction with its Crime Prevention Unit to organize several alcohol prevention programs, reaching over 500 students as a result. Jim Beam, sponsor of Andretti Green Racing and 2003 IndyCar® Series Rookie of the Year Dan Wheldon, Thursday continued its support of The Michael Andretti Foundation, donating $100,000 as part of Jim Beam's ongoing efforts to promote responsible choices about alcohol. In 2003, Jim Beam became the first major contributor to the foundation and continues the partnership with the donated funds now totaling $200,000. Throughout the 2004 Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar Series season, Andretti will make donations from this fund to local universities in various race markets for the purpose of alcohol education.

Class of 2003 Giving College Advice
Lehigh University business student Marissa Tringali recently attended her high school alma mater to discuss tales of life after high school. I'm looking at studying business or accounting and it is offered in Australia and London and I'll probably go to London, said Marissa Tringali, who studies business at Lehigh University. I need to make sure they fit into my core curriculum. High school seniors and juniors got a glimpse into how college life differs from the life they're used to at high school. And they got that glimpse with a little help from the high school's class of 2003.
