Land Designated as Innovation Zone
Gov. Ed Rendell officially designated Lehigh University and South Side Bethlehem as one of the state's first two Keystone Innovation Zones (KIZs) on Wednesday. The new program is designed to generate high-tech businesses near Pennsylvania's numerous science and engineering schools. Rendell said the KIZ program will target gazelle businesses -- small, high-tech startups that often form out of ideas from college faculty members and recent science graduates. Rendell presented $250,000 to match funds from the Ben Franklin Partnership at Lehigh to start up the KIZ, which will be administered by the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp. The state's first two KIZs will surround Lehigh and also Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. (Scroll down)

The Transformation of Turkey
Eli Schwartz, professor emeritus of business and economics at Lehigh University, wrote an op-ed about Turkey and its potential as a role model for other countries. “Turkey’s economy has a long way to go, in comparison with others in Europe, but it is a nation that is democratic, secular -- and Muslim. Turkey was not always democratic and secular, of course, and I believe that its story is helpful to us today, especially in light of President Bush's dream of seeing democracy spread throughout the Middle East. From my readings and experience of visiting the Middle East and Turkey, I believe the admission of Turkey to the European Union would be a worthwhile accomplishment. Certainly it would help the Turkish economy. But perhaps, more importantly, the successful assimilation of a moderate, modern Muslim country into a vital democratic, economic society would provide an attractive role model for other countries to follow,” he wrote.

Money-Savvy Observers Believe Domestic Maven Needed to be Held Accountable
Parveen Gupta, associate professor of accounting at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about Martha Stewart’s sentence of five months in prison. Gupta said it's about time keepers of the money are being taken to task for dishonest schemes. In my mind the answer is very simple. I don't care if you are a big shot or a small shot. If you committed a crime and it has been proven, you should have to serve the penalty, he said. Gupta also blames naïve investors for trusting money managers. It seems to me that everybody is somewhat guilty in this whole game, he said.

Kerry McCoy, who coaches wrestling at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article about competing in the upcoming Olympics. McCoy will compete in the men's 264 1/2-pound weight class for the United States. McCoy, 29, placed second at the World Freestyle Championships in September and hopes to do better than his fifth-place finish at the 2000 games in Sydney.
