Tim Herrlinger, associate director of corporate relations at Lehigh, was quoted in an article in the July/August 2004 issue of Advancing Philanthropy magazine regarding his attendance at the 2004 Association of Fundraising Professionals International Conference in Seattle, WA. Sunday’s Opening Plenary Session featured Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. “The duchess certainly spoke to what should be at the heart of our profession,” said Herrlinger. “She has made a conscious decision to be a positive force in the world. Those are the people we need to work with. It’s important to be a positive force. We have to make the big changes.”

South Side Opens Innovation Zone
Bethlehem became one of two cities in the state Wednesday to form a Keystone Innovation Zone, which is designed to help south Bethlehem's growing number of technology businesses forge a partnership with Lehigh University. Gov. Ed Rendell, appearing at the university's Campus Square before about 200 student and local leaders, offered words of encouragement and a $250,000 check that will match a $250,000 grant from the South Bethlehem KIZ Committee, which got about half its money from the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority. ''I offer this check … with great hope,'' Rendell said. ''We've come to the time where we begin to do business.'' Lehigh President Gregory Farrington said students who participate in KIZ business development will get a unique educational experience and bolster the local economy. ''Through targeted learning programs and internship opportunities, Lehigh students will graduate with an experience level that will give them a discernible advantage over other graduates,'' Farrington said.

Bethlehem Getting $7.5 Million in Grants
Gov. Ed Rendell, who was in the city to hand over money for a technology business partnership with Lehigh University, said he will deliver $2.5 million for the Lehigh Riverport retail and residential mall and $5 million for a new Northampton Community College campus. The two projects would lead the way for development of Bethlehem Works, the planned $450 million retail, entertainment and residential district envisioned eight years ago to occupy former Bethlehem Steel land. Mayor John Callahan said NCC's presence on the South Side is within the Keystone Innovation Zone, the business technology partnership with Lehigh University. NCC's plans would dovetail with Lehigh's, Callahan said. ''Lehigh will be working on developing technology-based businesses, and NCC will be training workers to work in what is developed by Lehigh.''

Rendell: $12 Million Puts Allentown in the Ballpark
Gov. Ed Rendell, who was at Lehigh University’s Campus Square on Wednesday, said that $12 million in state money earmarked for a Lehigh Valley baseball stadium will go to the proposed Agere project if local matching funds are raised. If not, the money will be granted to a competing proposal in Williams Township, the governor said. It was the first time Rendell stated a preference in the baseball grant sweepstakes that at one time involved four proposals. ''We're really down to two competitors right now,'' Rendell said at an impromptu news conference at Lehigh University's Campus Square in south Bethlehem.
