Subduction Zone, Shallow Depth Made Tsunami Quake Deadly
Anne Meltzer, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about the tsunami. The location of the recent earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami in the Indian Ocean came as no surprise to geologists, says Meltzer, a world-renowned seismologist who has supervised two major international seismology research projects in the Himalayas. “Earthquakes like this one happen only once every 50 to 100 years, and they happen in very specific locations,” says Meltzer. The earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Dec. 26 occurred along a “subduction zone” where the Indian tectonic plate is being subducted, or pulled beneath, the Burma tectonic platelet, says Meltzer.

Guidance Down the Road to Higher Ed
Lehigh was mentioned in an article on the role of guidance counselors in helping students choose the university they will attend. The article specifically focused on Anisha Tanna, a high school student at Jericho High School. “…Tanna is busy at work on application to five other schools: Villanova, George Washington, Lehigh University, Binghamton University, and Vasser College,” the article said.

Stephen Thode, associate professor of finance and law at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article about the real estate market forecast for 2005. Thode, also director of Lehigh University's Murray H. Goodman Center for Real Estate, would like to see oil prices drop, decreasing the risks of inflation and a possible corresponding rise in mortgage rates. Now, he said, oil prices are hanging over the market.

Human Complexity and Diversity Spring from a Surprisingly Few Genes
Research by Stefan Maas, assistant professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, into the connection between RNA editing and the complexity and diversity of the human species was described in articles on several medical-news web sites. Maas and his research group have analyzed brain tumor tissues and tissues from a healthy brain and have discovered that one type of RNA editing, called A-to-I editing, is widespread among human genes.
Maas and a colleague last month published an article titled “Widespread A-to-I RNA Editing of Alu-Containing mRNAs in the Human Transcriptome,” In the journal PloS Biology.

Lehigh was mentioned in an article on an interview with Donald T. Cunningham, Jr., Secretary of the state Department of General Services. He was asked about the period when he was the mayor of Bethlehem from 1998 to 2003, a time when there was recovery from the area’s failed steel mills. Specifically, he was asked about the things that enabled Bethlehem to recover. “We had Lehigh University, an extraordinary engineering and science school,” he said. “We were able to do some technology development on former steel manufacturing sites using Lehigh’s tech incubation.”

Lehigh was mentioned in an article on Ikon Office Solution’s new education efforts to establish itself as a leader with clients and the press. “Ikon customer panelists included representatives from the New Haven Register and Lehigh University,” the article said.

DOE Outlines Initiative on Power Plant Freshwater Impact
Lehigh was mentioned in an article on the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) initiating an R&D effort to develop advanced concepts and technologies to better manage how power plants use and impact freshwater. Lehigh is involved in the use of coal drying to reduce water consumed in pulverized coal power plants. This project will determine the feasibility of using low-grade power plant waste heat to dry low-rank coals prior to introduction into the boiler. Heat from condenser cooling water will be extracted upstream of the cooling tower and used to dry the coal. Lowering the temperature of the return cooling water will reduce evaporative loss in the tower, thus reducing overall water consumption.

Caldwell Resident Receives Honors from Assemblyman
Lehigh University student and Caldwell resident Elena McGovern was honored by Assemblyman John F. McKeon, D-Essex, on Thursday, October 14 at a fall fundraiser at the West Orange Manor. McKeon is a third year honor student at Lehigh where she is pursuing a major in international relations and minor in political science. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Amnesty International, Phi Eta Sigma Honor’s Society and Alpha Phi national sorority.

City Officials Join Anti-Crime Effort
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about being a partner of the Pennsylvania Regional Community Policing Institute. About 30 city elected officials, department heads and bureau supervisors are coming in Saturday to learn how they can help fight crime. All the training is being done by the Pennsylvania Regional Community Policing Institute. The city police department is one of three partners in the federally funded organization, along with the ALERT Partnership of the Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network and Lehigh University.
