Sally White, professor and dean, Lehigh University College of Education, offered advice for making and keeping New Year's resolutions on the top health Web site, WebMD. White, who studies motivation, discussed the importance of understanding what will motivate an individual. Research in adherence motivation tells us that strategies have to fit individuals' orientation and very different perceptions of what equals success, says White. The field speaks of task and ego orientation, and nearly 45 studies show women to be more task oriented and men to be more ego oriented.

Jack Lule, professor of journalism and communication, was mentioned by Bill O’Reilly on “The O’Reilly Factor. Lule had given a newspaper interview in which he said shows like O'Reilly's, in which hosts and guests spend the majority of time yelling at and interrupting each other, could not really be considered journalism. They are a product of spectacle rather than journalism, Lule said. Mr. O'Reilly took exception.

In article on the recent Ephedra ban, Lehigh University football coach Pete Lembo said he educates his players at the start of each season about legal but questionable supplements. If you address the issue, you can prevent student-athletes from experimenting with supplements, Lembo said. We believe in telling our athletes about what is out there and what is potentially harmful to them.

Group Supports Idea Universe Is Designed by God
Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, spoke at an October symposium sponsored by Science Speaks, an Orlando-area organization of lay people interested in Intelligent Design, a movement driven mostly by Christians eager to use the tools of science to discover what they say are the divinely established foundations of the universe. Behe pointed to what he called the irreducible complexity of a biochemical mechanism such as blood clotting. The conclusion of design is empirical, he said.

Taylor’s Approach is the Right Approach for Lehigh
Lehigh University's athletic administration might want to consider giving head men's basketball coach Billy Taylor a contract extension — and maybe offer to pay his dry cleaning bill. Lehigh should become even more accommodating than it already has been is because of the strong morality, discipline, respect and winning attitude that Taylor has brought to the program.

Lehigh Shows Discipline in Win over Wagner
Lehigh coach Billy Taylor has established himself as a disciplinarian in his first two seasons. And nobody is openly complaining. Maybe that's because Taylor has proven himself to be a good coach who is winning games, even when the odds appear to be against the Mountain Hawks. Such was the case Friday night in a nonleague game against Wagner at Stabler Arena.

Profit Helps Develop Drugs That Prolong Our Lives
Eli Schwartz, an emeritus professor of economics and finance for Lehigh University, wrote an op ed defending pharmaceuticals. If one were to think of the most sweeping change over the last 50 years affecting the way we live, it would not be electronics but medicine, he wrote. … it is the pharmaceuticals that bring the cure to the market.

Smart Cookies
The Society of Women Engineers at Lehigh University will be with Girl Scout Troop 539 of Bethlehem Township this weekend at the Palmer Park Mall where troops from Pennsylvania and New Jersey spent the last few months building freestanding structures using cookie boxes. It is the second year the girls participated in the Cookie Box Creations event, which is designed to get Scouts thinking about nontraditional career fields for women, like engineering and architecture.

On The Job Hunt in 2004
Donna Goldfeder, director of Career Services at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on the present difficulty of finding a job. A job at one time was literally just a few mouse clicks away, says Goldfeder. Students found a job by just looking at a few job boards on the Internet. Now they have to be more assertive by digging deeper and networking, by talking to anybody and everybody.

Hawks End 2003 with a Wild Win
As the lady Mountain Hawk basketball team headed into the second overtime stanza against Mount St. Mary on Wednesday, it seemed as if the teams wanted to dance into the New Year in Stabler Arena. Not until Dawn Gorynski deposited a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining was Lehigh able to raise a glass in toast to its 86-83 win.

Orwell’s “1984” Anxiety Creeps Into Ideals of the Free World
Twenty years after 1984, a year author George Orwell prophesied as dark and without freedom, the United States of America has some of the earmarks of Orwell's vision.
Nikolai Eberhardt, semi-retired from teaching at Lehigh University, recently re-read 1984 for the first time since his undergraduate days in the 1950s in Munich, Germany.
I came to the conclusion that in those days, I found it too gory, too depressing, Eberhardt said. So I don't think I got through it.
