“Ungodly” Agency Shop Fees Revisited
Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law in the College of Education at Lehigh, wrote an article about the Chino Valley School District, located approximately 30 miles east of Los Angeles. The school district signed a negotiated agreement with the duly authorized union representing the certified employees, the Associated Chino Teachers (ACT). The agreement provided that every member of the represented unit would become either a member of the ACT or an agency fee payer. “The issue of collective bargaining for teachers, which is not at all universal among the states, and its specific sub-issues, such as the legally correct tailoring of agency shop procedures, remain hotly debated,” wrote Zirkel. “For religious claims, the distinction between objections to specific activities and objections to unions as a whole makes sense at least in theory…Ungodliness depends on one’s point of view.”

Creationism Gains Toehold in PA
Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was again quoted regarding the theory of intelligent design. Intelligent design posits that the human cell, among other organisms, is too finely tuned to have developed by chance. “The human cell is irreducibly complex—what we find in the cell is stuff that looks strongly like it was designed by intelligence,” said Behe.

Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about its Small Business Development Center. “These centers provide educational programs to startup companies,” the article said. “Committee members have been developing programs to help these entrepreneurs succeed. Programs are being developed at Kutztown, Temple, and Lehigh universities, and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Some of the topics being discussed include basic accounting software, business plans, and tax issues.”

Inside The World of Mr. Imagination
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about south Bethlehem-based artist Mr. Imagination. He’s made a career as an internationally recognized artist out of creating art from “found objects” – glass, paintbrushes, common household items, and, most frequently, bottle caps. Among the notable projects were: In 2003, he worked with students from Professor Norman Girardot's Raw Vision course at Lehigh to maintain and add to the Lehigh Concrete Millennial Arch at Lehigh University, and in 2000, he was one of four featured artists in the Four Outsider Artists: The End is Just the Beginning exhibit at Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University.
