Robert J. Thornton, professor of economics at Lehigh, is the author of the ''Lexicon of Intentionally Ambiguous Recommendations,'' or LIAR for short. This tongue-in-cheek manual shows employers and professors how to resort to double meanings in order to avoid outright lies and lawsuits. So for a lazy employee, Thornton writes, you could say, ''In my opinion, you will be very fortunate to get this person to work for you.'' How about the incompetent wretch? ''I recommend this man with no qualifications whatsoever.''

Go Hear the Poetry of Freedom
On Friday at 8:00 p.m. in the Diamond Theater of Lehigh University’s Zoellner Arts Center, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, a celebrated opponent of oppression whose writing has been translated into 70-plus languages, will read his poetry. Yevtushenko's poems on the Grand Canyon and the space shuttle Challenger disaster are featured in Louis Karchin's composition ''American Visions,'' which will be performed by the Lehigh University Very Modern Ensemble during the ''American Visions II'' concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in Zoellner's Baker Hall.

Student EMTs are Gaining Exposure
Lehigh is one of 14 Pennsylvania colleges that belong to the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation. When an emergency is reported to campus police, three students from the emergency service typically respond. ''My guys, when (Lehigh’s emergency service) comes to the scene, they’ll back off because they're properly trained,'' said Lehigh University Police Chief Edward Shupp.

Bonnie Devlin, vice president for advancement in the development office at Lehigh, is part of the 2004 Lehigh Valley Women of Distinction Advisory Board for the Girl Scouts. In addition to acknowledging the contributions that they have made to their various career fields and communities, the Women of Distinction provides mentoring opportunities for local teenage Girl Scouts. It also secures financial support for Great Valley Council programs that serve more than 17,000 girls throughout the greater Lehigh Valley and Berks County.

Heather Herman, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Annapolis who did her undergraduate work at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article on rising malpractice insurance costs. Heather Herman didn't spend four years at Lehigh University and four more at a grueling residency at the University of Pennsylvania to walk away from her medical career after just seven years in practice, the article said.

Woodfield Crest, a $4 million condominium complex proposed for nine acres between Bethlehem's border with Lower Saucon Township and Lehigh University's Goodman Campus, recently got larger. The city planning commission last week granted conditional final approval for plans to expand the development from 21 to 27 units.
