U.S. Adds Israel to the Iran Equation
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about President Bush’s inauguration. In bluntly threatening terms on Inauguration Day, Vice President Dick Cheney removed any doubt that in its second term the Bush administration intended to directly confront the theocracy in Tehran. “There's a rhetorical escalation here: They've ratcheted up the threat level by bringing Israel in,” said Barkey, a former State Department official during the Clinton administration. “They're using the fact of the inauguration, and the uncertainty people have about where they're going in the next term, to say, ‘Look, we're not going to let up on Iran.’”

Air Quality OK in Schools, Study Finds
Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law in the College of Education at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article about a state health expert who found no major air quality concerns to block either East or Paris Gibson middle schools from being used but recommended ventilation improvements at both schools. In September, the board received an analysis by Zirkel, an expert in school disability law. He concluded that the board had not violated the law and probably would not lose a lawsuit by choosing to close East, which is fully handicap-accessible, while retaining Paris, which has three floors and no elevators.

Michael J. Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was again mentioned regarding his theory of Intelligent Design. “Darwin's Black Box” is the title of Behe's 1996 book in which he emphasizes the complexity of molecular systems such as the bacterial flagellum. Identified by electron microscopes, it is what Behe calls an “irreducibly complex system” that is necessarily composed of at least three parts – a paddle, a rotor and a motor. He argues that Darwinian theory cannot account for it.

A Wind Ensemble
Like No Other
The Lehigh Valley Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble, which will present its annual concert at Kutztown University at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Ensemble, which is made up of specially selected players from Lehigh University, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College and Kutztown University, was the brainchild of Al Neumeyer, who at the time was director of both Lehigh's and Muhlenberg's wind ensembles and in control of half the potential participants.

Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about state colleges who graduate less than half of the members of their freshman classes within six years. Most private schools in the Lehigh Valley exceeded the national average for such institutions, according to the Education Trust study. Lafayette College and Lehigh University had the highest rates — 86 percent at both schools — followed by Muhlenberg College with 78 percent and Moravian College with 72 percent. Statewide, the system's average is 51 percent — just 2 percentage points below the national average for similar schools.

Radio frequency technology keeps track of inventory and people
RCD Technology of Bethlehem, in Ben Franklin Technology Partners' incubator at Lehigh University, is targeting other markets, including radio frequency ID wristbands for hospitals and concert venues. The three-employee company moved to the Lehigh Valley in 2001 from New Jersey. Company President Bob Oberle believes his product is the cheapest of any in the field.
