Fighting the Flu

Jeff Sands, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was interviewed for a story on the flu virus. Sands says the big problem with controlling influenza is that the virus mutates more quickly than researchers can gear up to produce it. In part, that's because flu vaccine is made with ''this really old technology,'' he says. ''It's still largely technology from 40 years ago.'' To allow for the needed lead time, vaccine producers must decide by early spring which flu strains will likely infect people during the following flu season. The scientists can guess wrong, Sands says, and the virus meanwhile has plenty of time to mutate and spread.
