US Lowers Hopes on Iraq Election
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in two more articles about the upcoming Iraq election. Despite possible disruptions to the January 30 poll, the US has no viable options or alternatives other than to proceed with it, analysts say. “I don't think they're thinking of a Plan B. What they have is permutations of Plan A: You go for elections, hope for the best and if it doesn't materialize, you go with whatever emerges - probably a heavily Shiite government,” said Barkey, also former State Department Iraq specialist.

Teach The Controversy About Evolution
Michael J. Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was again mentioned regarding his theory of Intelligent Design. “Darwin's Black Box” is the title of Behe's 1996 book in which he emphasizes the complexity of molecular systems such as the bacterial flagellum. Identified by electron microscopes, it is what Behe calls an “irreducibly complex system” that is necessarily composed of at least three parts – a paddle, a rotor and a motor. He argues that Darwinian theory cannot account for it.

New Ship Hull Forms Under Development – January 2005
Researchers at Lehigh University have completed a 6m/20 ft model of a new hybrid ship hull concept, under an Office of Naval Research (ONR) grant. The concept involves a steel truss closed out with fiberglass/foam core sandwich panels, says lead investigator Joachim Grenestedt, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Lehigh. The panels are very lightweight but strong enough to take sea pressures as well as shear loads. The steel truss supports global bending loads and provides high stiffness for the hull “girder.” The model underwent a 12-point bend test (supported at four locations, and loaded at eight), using a single hydraulic jack combined with load spreader beams to simulate sagging loads experienced by large vessels at sea. At 40 percent above design load, the steel had yielded substantially, but no failure was observed in any of the sandwich panels or bonds.

Olympus Starts Hiring, Building Its New Home
Lehigh was mentioned in an article about Olympus trying to attract graduates from colleges throughout the Northeast. On-campus interviews at Lehigh University in Bethlehem at Lafayette College in Easton are scheduled for spring, the article said. Donna Goldfeder, director of career services at Lehigh, said students there mobbed Olympus representatives at a campus job fair in September. “I took them out to dinner later. The representatives from Olympus could not talk after the end of the day,” Goldfeder said. “They had used their voices up.”

Area Events Planned in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Kristal Brent Zook, journalist, author and scholar, spoke last night at 7 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Vine and Packer avenues. The event was sponsored by Lehigh University. The university also hosted an interfaith prayer breakfast from 8:30-10 a.m. Monday morning in the Asa Packer Room on the third floor of the University Center. Zook has written about popular culture, race, gender, and politics for more than a decade. Her work in film and television has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, USA Weekend and Vibe magazine. She is a contributing writer for Essence and an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.
