Turkish Leader to Press Iraq Concerns with Bush
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was recently interviewed on the situation in Turkey. If Turkey had joined the war effort, the situation in Iraq might be even worse because Ankara's involvement would have fanned anti-Turkish sentiment, he said. He also told Reuters that Ankara now seems obsessed with the Kurds in northern Iraq, and this is stoking Iraqi anger against Turkey and making matters worse. Turkey would have been better off cooperating with Iraqi Kurds and getting them to be friends with Turkey, he said.

Wrestler Seeking Another Olympic Shot
Lehigh’s assistant wrestling coach Kerry McCoy was quoted in an article about his quest for Olympic gold when he competes in the U.S. Olympic Trials at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis in May. “A gold medal would be the ultimate,” said McCoy. “I have an Olympic flag hanging in my bedroom; I see it every time I wake up and go to sleep.”

Drug Sweep Sparks Lawsuits
Perry A. Zirkel, University Professor of education and law, was quoted in an article in the January 7 edition of Education Week Zirkel specifically commented on a case at Stratford High School in Goose Creek, South Carolina, where a videotape shows officers charging into a hallway, guns drawn, yelling, and subjecting more than 100 students, most of them African-American, to searches for drugs. Zirkel said the primary issue in the Stratford case would be whether the use of guns by police fit the gravity of the situation.

Lee Kern, class of 1961 associate professor of special education at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article on the $3.5 million, five-year award from the U.S. Department of Education that enabled Lehigh University and UC Riverside to develop Project REACH. The project will follow 125 students, ranging in grades from kindergarten through ninth, for four years to identify effective strategies for improving their long-term quality of life.

Spirit's first transmission of panoramic photos has stirred scientists, including Lehigh University physics professor Gary DeLeo, whose favorite planet is Mars. Clearly, it looks like water once flowed into Gusev Crater, DeLeo said. The opportunity to work with NASA scientists, DeLeo said, is an honor and a privilege for the Allen students. It should be extraordinarily exciting for them, he said, and something they will remember for the rest of their lives.''

Lehigh University Art Galleries' curator Ricardo Viera was mentioned in an article about an exhibition that features the art of Rafael Canizares. Viera is guest curator of the exhibit, which is on display at the Allentown Art Museum through January 18.Canizares makes hand-coiled clay vessels, some of which are taller than six feet. Others are smaller than six inches.

Lehigh graduate Martha Tennille has grown night-blooming cereus for more than 35 years, at least 10 of which came from one plant she bought when she was a student at Lehigh. Propagating the plants is easy. All you do is cut off branches and stick them in pots, she says.

Bethlehem Planners to Look at Development Change
Woodfield Crest, a $4 million condominium complex proposed for nine acres between Bethlehem's border with Lower Saucon Township and Lehigh University's Goodman Campus, could grow a bit. City planners on Thursday will consider changing the approved plan to allow the 21-unit complex to increase by six units, but some residents say they are wary because of drainage issues in the neighborhood.
