Girl Scouts from the Great Valley Council will attend the Lehigh women's basketball game on Feb. 14 against American University at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa. T-shirts will be distributed, and the Lehigh women will meet with the girls. Various basketball drills and activities are also scheduled. Over 200 girls are coming in, said Kelly Berk, a Lehigh forward who attended Archbishop Carroll High. I would tell them that if you put your mind to something and have dedication and desire and drive, I believe you can achieve your dream.

Lehigh was mentioned in an article regarding universities changing, updating or at least standardizing logos, slogans, mascots, and team names. Lehigh University changed its teams from Engineers -- a reference to its railroad-president founder and early focus on engineering -- to the Mountain Hawks in the 1990s.

Laura Olson, chair of Lehigh University's political science department, was interviewed for an article on the role of the first lady. When she started teaching a course on first ladies in 2000, Olson notes, she found only a handful of books devoted to the position. Now there are ''hundred and hundreds.'' Olson also points out that no role was assigned to the first lady by the Constitution, but even from the beginning, there were expectations that she have a social role. ''And some of the first ladies used this very cleverly for political gain,'' she notes.

Lehigh Hires Defensive Coordinator, Backs Coach
The Lehigh University football program has announced the hiring of Shannon Morrison as the team's new defensive coordinator and linebacker coach, and Gerard Wilcher as the squad's new defensive backs coach. Morrison replaces Tom Gilmore, who recently departed to become the head coach at Holy Cross. Wilcher will take over for Isaac Collins, who accompanied Gilmore to Holy Cross.
