A letter to the editor by Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was published in today's edition of the Wall Street Journal. Behe and three other readers responded to a column in the February 20 edition of the Journal in which science writer Sharon Begley discussed new arguments against the theory of intelligent design and against Behe's theory of the irreducible complexity of some organisms. Behe, the author of “Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution, said in today's letter that intelligent design cannot be ruled out by the evidence.

Mary Beth Deily, associate professor of economics at Lehigh University, continues to be quoted in an article about International Steel Group. According to Deily, ISG has succeeded at dealing with the union and getting everybody on board and moving ahead and getting the workers to kind of buy into what sacrifices they have to make to keep this capacity running.

A pause in the furor around art reduced to politics
Almost a month after Morning Call arts critic Geoff Gehman first wrote about The Forbidden Pictures: A Political Tableau, he revisited the Larry Fink display to discuss the controversy surrounding it. Gehman writes, 'The Forbidden Pictures' is, in short, an excellent example of good art reduced to bad politics. Gehman offers a point-counterpoint look at the arguments surrounding the exhibit. Among them, Point: This left-leaning show doesn't belong in Maginnes Hall, center of Lehigh's supposedly non-partisan department of political science. Counterpoint: Maginnes is an ideal site. It's one of Lehigh's busiest buildings, a hub of diversity. Because the Fink exhibit shares a roof with political science and history classes, it's an easy field trip. Hung in a hallway, Fink's photos encourage serious and casual attention, gazing and grazing.

Bush Asks Congress to Increase Support for Manufacturing
The Bush administration urged Congress on Thursday to allow a nationwide network of business assistance programs to compete for up to $45.4 million in federal grants next year. Among those competing for funds is the Manufacturing Resource Center at Lehigh University. It assists small and mid-sized manufacturers by making assessments, consulting with management, providing training, assisting with grant applications and locating resources. It has completed more than 3,000 projects to date for about 500 companies in the Lehigh Valley.

Lehigh and Rowland on a Title Watch
Lehigh men's basketball (17-8, 10-2 Patriot) is in first place in the Patriot League and can achieve school history by winning road games at Colgate tonight and at Holy Cross on Sunday to end the regular season. If the Mountain Hawks win both games they will win the school's first outright regular season title. ''It's a great feeling to compete for a championship and to win the championship,'' said (coach) Billy Taylor. ''It's really a validation that everything you do paid off.

The Passion of the Fastnacht
Mark Wonsidler, assistant preparator at Lehigh University art galleries, entered his sculpture of fastnachts wrapped in cotton marked with charcoal in the Fastnacht Sculpture Contest and took third place overall with 1,151 votes. ''I e-mailed everybody I knew and my parents did the same thing,'' says Wonsidler. He also spread the word around Lehigh University. ''Lots of people saw the article and asked me about it, and how I made the piece. They wanted to know if I had any leftovers,'' he says.

On March 7 at 3:00 p.m., Lehigh University’s Zoellner Arts Center, Greg Funfgeld, the Bach Choir and the Bach Festival Orchestra will present an interactive program for children and their families. This year's concert features young instrumentalists performing with the orchestra.
