Lehigh Puts Space Shuttle Under Study
Arnold Marder, professor of materials science and engineering, and his students drew media attention as they opened for the first time sealed bags containing pieces of debris from the Columbia Space Shuttle, which exploded on re-entry two years ago. These students are the first and only students to analyze the debris. Their work conclusions will ultimately help NASA determine how aluminum and other metals behave under the extreme conditions of hypersonic re-entry into the atmosphere.

Hershey Wants to Alter Name, Double Shares Outstanding
Samuel Weaver, professor of practice of finance and law at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about Hershey Foods Corp. wanting to change its name. Hershey Foods Corp., the nation's largest candy maker, wants to change its name to The Hershey Co. and double its available shares to help finance future, unspecified enterprises as part of a larger corporate makeover. Weaver said the company must be considering a big purchase because it doesn't have considerable debt and it has enough cash to fund its capital improvements.

Capturing An Artist in the Act of Creation
The George Segal exhibit at Lehigh was the topic of an article last month. “A collection of Donald Lokuta’s behind-the-scenes photographs are on display in conjunction with a retrospective exhibit through April 18 in two galleries at Lehigh University,” the article said. “Lokuta and Segal bonded over photographer soon after their first meeting.”

Davidson Hosts Talk by Noted Novelist Rushdie
Lehigh was mentioned in an article about the talk by Salman Rushdie the university hosted two years ago. “Two years ago at Lehigh University, Rushdie told an audience that he wasn’t going to discuss the second-rate literary critic from Iran,’” the article said. “Then he added: ‘Except to say that one of us is dead.’” Rushdie spoke on February 1 at Davidson College. Odds are he won’t say much about the nine years he spent in hiding after the late Iranian ruler Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa (death sentence) against him for having written “The Satanic Verses,” a novel that’s irreverent about Islam.

Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was mentioned in a letter regarding his book, “Darwin’s Black Box.” In his Feb. 7 article in The New York Times explaining intelligent design (ID), Behe asserted that ID is not a religiously based idea, even though devout people opposed to the teaching of evolution cite it in their arguments. NCAA Asks Presidents to Study Sports’ Costs
Peter Likins, former president of Lehigh, was mentioned in an article about the National Collegiate Athletic Association forming a panel of college presidents to study the future of college sports. While he was at Lehigh, Likins, who is now at the University of Arizona, was one of the founders of the Patriot League.

Perry Zirkel, University Professor of education and law in Lehigh’s College of Education, wrote an article in the March/April 2005 edition of Principle Magazine, about bullying and the growing recommendations that schools make anti-bullying part of their mission. “In the wake of Columbine and other high-profile school shootings, educators and the public at large have become increasingly aware of the danger and damage that bullying can cause,” says Zirkel.

Lehigh Schedules 36th Annual Latex Short Course, June 6-10
Lehigh University will hold its 36th annual one-week short course entitled “Advances in Emulsion Polymerization and Latex Technology” on June 6-10, 2005 in Sinclair Laboratory Auditorium. The course is designed for engineers, chemists, other scientists and managers actively involved in emulsion work, as well as persons who wish to develop expertise in the area.

Research by Peter Zeitler, professor of earth and environmental science at Lehigh, was published in the American Journal of Science. The title of the study is “U-Pb zircon constrains on the tectonic evolution of southeastern Tibet, Namche Barwa area.”

Middle School students from local schools built fruit and vegetable batteries as part of CHOICES, a program designed to spark middle school girls’ interest in careers in engineering. A photograph of the girls testing their batteries appeared in the local section of today’s Morning Call.

V-Day “Monologues” Speak Out for Women
At Lehigh University in Bethlehem, two sophomores, Chris Diggs and Alex Milspaw, have been working to organize the performance of “The Vagina Monologues.” Both students believe that by performing the play they can raise awareness about issues that aren't generally talked about. Diggs says performing “Monologues” gives cast members and audiences a night envisioning a world without violence against women. For Milspaw, producing the play was one of the best experiences of her life. “It was great to watch (the cast) bloom and come out of their shells.” According to Gus Ripa, Lehigh University's Theatre Department head, organizing their performance has been a grass-roots effort and totally student generated, though faculty members and theater students have been available to coach anyone who asks. The show will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Zoellner Arts Center.

Diversity Day, Postponed Once, Comes Off Without a Hitch
Mohamed M. Bugaighis, prominent lecturer on Arab and Islamic issues and statistics professor emeritus at Moravian College and Lehigh University, led a compelling presentation at Palisades High School Diversity Day on January 18. He explained a critical moment in religious history that distinguished Sunni Muslims from Shiite. A Muslim for 67 years, Bugaighis also described Malcom X’s pilgrimage to the holy site of Mecca, and how the African-American leader experienced a revelation from being around Caucasians that caused him to embrace diversity.

Lehigh University assistant wrestling coach Kerry McCoy was quoted in an article about the International Olympic Committee’s evaluation of their four-day visit to New York to assess the city’s bid for the 2012 Summer Games. “I thought that for this entire country and for New York, which I think is the greatest city in world, if you think about everything that we've gone through - 9/11, especially - hosting an Olympic Games would be a great show of strength and the resounding spirit of our people,” McCoy said. “To come back from all that and host the Games would embody the Olympic spirit, I think.”

Majestic To Outfit Lehigh Teams
Majestic Athletic Ltd., which is outfitting all 30 Major League Baseball teams for the first time this season, is also teaming up with Lehigh University on a uniform deal. Lehigh will promote Majestic in its advertising during athletic events as part of the partnership. Neither Glenn Hofmann, associate athletics director, nor Majestic President Faust Capobianco IV would divulge the price of the deal, but both expressed optimism about it. Hofmann cited Majestic's “quality” in uniform manufacturing as a key reason for Lehigh's decision. “I think it's exciting for them because of the visibility we can give them,” said Hofmann. “Ultimately, we would like to expand the program,” added Hofmann. “It's just a matter of working together with them, what they're comfortable with.”

All The City’s A Stage This Summer
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about the adaptation of the classic novel of good and evil, “Don Quixote of Bethlehem.” On Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10 at 5:30 p.m., the city will host two free performances in the streets of South Side Bethlehem. A map of the route indicates the players will stroll along South Bethlehem, beginning at Lehigh University's Zoellner Arts Center, through the Lehigh University campus, down New Street to Third Street, back up to Fourth Street, then to Hayes Street, and eventually to end at historic St. Michael's Cemetery.
