Business World Readies for Wave of Megadeals
After a four-year lull, the field of mergers and acquisitions is set to blossom again. But even as merger-and-acquisition activity gains momentum today, the seeds of a cyclical slowdown are one interest-rate increase away, said Samuel Weaver, associate professor of finance at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Weaver said that interest rates must rise, eventually. The question is when and how fast. A pre-emptive move by the Federal Reserve to raise rates and fight inflation could hammer the stock market and slow the economy.

Lehigh Adopts Optiwave Program
Lehigh University launched its new multi-million dollar Center for Optical Technologies in 2000. The fully developed program includes optical communications, optics, photonics, and optoelectronics. Lehigh has now adopted the Optiwave for Educators program, which allows teachers to incorporate Optiwave’s industry-standard simulation software tools into curriculum and research. Professor Alastair McAulay, of the Center for Optical Technologies, says, “In electronics, we were using software applications for electronic VSLI, and it proved to be a very effective way to teach electronic engineers about electronic circuits. Now we can make the same thing happen for optics.”

7th Annual Business Development Symposium
Dr. Wei-xian Zhang, associate professor civil and environmental engineering, Fritz Engineering Laboratory, Lehigh University, will be one of many speakers at this year's Business Development Symposium that will focus on Having It All - Using Technology to Protect Our Environment and Grow Our Prosperity. Through BDS '04, attendees will consider how new technologies and commercially innovative ways of using them can be used to measure natural conditions, minimize the impact of economic activity, and remediate damage to the Chesapeake region's environment.

Sean David McKeever, who participates in the High School Scholars Program at Lehigh University and is a senior at Lehigh Christian High School, Allentown, has been named a recipient of the ''Best of the Best'' award. McKeever has received first places awards at the Lehigh University Science and Engineering Fair, the Association of Christian Schools International Science Fair, and an honorable mention at the Delaware Valley Science and Engineering Fair.
