Portal Integration and a Scalable, Flexible Enterprise System
Bruce Taggart, vice president and provost of library and technology services at Lehigh, wrote an article on Lehigh's portal system in Syllabus magazine. At Lehigh University, our goal is to increasingly personalize our portal to the needs of each individual user and to make it their primary institution resource. For example, in 2003 we conducted our summer freshmen orientation completely online through our portal. All the resources that freshmen needed, from 'meeting' with counselors and library services, to gathering information on residence halls and food services, were available online, he wrote.

Study of Humanities Remains Vibrant at Lehigh
Carl Moses, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lehigh, wrote an op-ed about the humanities and social science programs. The humanities and social science disciplines are quite alive at Lehigh University, where there is growing university-wide support for them, and where a number of new initiatives have been introduced, he wrote. The article went on to explain a few examples of the new programs, including the Humanities Center, Global Citizenship Program, and ArtsLehigh.

Responding to the needs of Pennsylvania businesses, the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs)--including the SBDC at Lehigh--have introduced the Pennsylvania Material Trader, a new on-line service that makes it easy to exchange and reuse traditionally discarded materials, such as outdated inventory, used shipping containers, old computer equipment, etc.

An exceptional program last Saturday brought 550 people to Zoellner Arts Center on a cold winter evening for ''American Visions II,'' presented by LUVME (Lehigh University's Very Modern Ensemble). The concert featured two unusual musical settings of works by major poets with the writers present for the performances.

Experts: Only if he Lied can Bush be Harmed
Frank Colon, a political science professor at Lehigh University, said the only long-term damage to Bush's candidacy will come if the commission finds he knowingly lied to the American public. The commission would have to show the president intentionally lied to us, Colon said. But we don't have anyone saying that. They're saying he was the victim of bad information.

Lehigh University Sociology Professor Robert Rosenwein was quoted in an article on online dating. “The TV age meant that people retreated to their homes and over time, they're continuing to spend less time in groups, says Rosenwein. Another reason is that many singles are becoming more career-obsessed.
The article also mentioned Zoellner Arts Center's first annual gathering for singles that will take place on Saturday, Feb. 7 following a concert by the Mark Morris Dance Group. Zoellner Art Center Director Liz Scofield immediately emphasized that the center's solo night isn't just for people looking for a potential relationship. It's for anyone looking to meet new people or a possible companion for a cultural event, she says. Singles are usually more comfortable with other singles and even if you come with someone you can look for more companions.

Lehigh’s Finding all the Answers
A certain calm permeates the Lehigh University men's basketball team this winter, and it was on display again in Sunday afternoon's 61-56 Patriot League victory over Colgate before a Stabler Arena crowd of 1,135. The win sends Lehigh (13-7) into the Patriot League's second half alone in second place behind Lafayette at 6-1, matching the previous best league start set by the 1990-91 team. I'm pleased where we are after the first round, Lehigh coach Billy Taylor said.

William F. Hecht, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in engineering at Lehigh, has been chairman of PP&L Corp. for the past 11 years. (Hecht) has really done some remarkable things at a time when most energy businesses were running into very real problems, says John Hanger, a member of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission during the 1990s.
