Cracks Could Shorten Bridge’s Life
John Fisher, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Lehigh University, was quoted again in the Times regarding the cracks in the new Memorial Causeway Bridge. He agreed that corrosion is a serious concern, but he said the problem is fixable. Those type of cracks are dealt with pretty well all the time in repairs, he said. Hairline cracks discovered in concrete supports for the new Memorial Causeway Bridge could shorten the structure's life span, experts agreed Wednesday. The cracks, found in four of its 16 supports, probably won't cause the $69.3-million bridge to collapse. But a chief fear is saltwater intrusion, which could reach the columns' interior steel reinforcements, corrode them and cause the bridge to age prematurely.

Lunchtime is Learning Time
Research on the school lunch period by Karen Evans Stout, associate professor of educational leadership at Lehigh, continues to generate interest. Stout contributed a feature article to the American School Board Journal's January 2004 issue. In the article
Stout writes, Is lunchtime as usual the best we can do? I don't think so. We need to make our voices heard about the nutritional quality of school lunch, how lunch can be used to foster positive social behavior, and ways to increase administrator, teacher and student participation. In today's climate of accountability, we are challenged to make every minute of the school day count, and that includes lunchtime. We need to make a commitment to offering every student a healthy lunch in a healthy environment.

Susan Yankowitz spent the day at Lehigh University recently working with the cast of her play, ''Night Sky,'' which opens Friday at the Zoellner Arts Center. Yankowitz, who began her professional career in the 1970s as a member of Joseph Chaikin's Open Theater group, says it was Chaiken who inspired her to write the play about a woman who loses her ability to speak.

Angela Davis, radical voice of the 1960s, Black Panther sympathizer, Communist and acquitted murder suspect will address ''How Gender Structures the Prison Industrial Complex'' at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in Lehigh University's Zoellner Arts Center. Davis has recently devoted her attention to the racism and sexism of what she calls the prison industrial complex. Privatized for corporate profit, ''prisons are becoming an integral part of the U.S. economy, which means that there are stakes other than anti-crime stakes that will keep the prison industry expanding,'' she said in a previous lecture.
