More Problems Take Toll on Clearwater’s Troubled Bridge
John Fisher, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article about Clearwater’s new Memorial Causeway Bridge. He said the mishaps suggest mistakes in construction. Somebody's just screwed up, he said. There's nothing wrong with the methods. It's when somebody screws up in the application. First, crews used explosives to drop an 80-foot section of the bridge span after it fell a foot and twisted in December 2002. Then, this month, another part of the roadway fell 7 inches when scaffolding underneath it buckled.

Claire Sullivan has accepted a full scholarship to play Division I basketball at Lehigh. Not only was the lure that she will play for a promising team in the Patriot League, but Lehigh is a school where she can fulfill her dream of someday going on to law school. For her, education plays an important part of it, (high school coach Jim) Davidson said. There were a lot of schools that were very hot on her trail, but she realized that going to them she would not get the education that she was hoping for. click here

ProSanos® Receives Pennsylvania Greenhouse Investment
The Life Sciences Greenhouse of Central Pennsylvania serves a wide geographic area, building on the research base provided by Penn State University, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and Lehigh University. It is a public/private venture with input and resources from government, business, universities, and economic development partners. They recently announced a $500,000 investment in ProSanos Corporation, a privately-held biomedical informatics company whose product development office is located in Harrisburg.

A Sea of Activity: Project aims for by-the-moment account of ocean floor
John Delaney, who majored in geology at Lehigh University, is about to open a window into the ocean with a Hubble telescope-style eye on the deep sea. He plans to lay a vast Internet network on the seafloor that he believes will fundamentally change how scientists study oceans and the planet. Delaney has been dreaming of a deep-sea observatory for more than 20 years. And his watery dream is almost reality.

Ben Franklin Touts Success
Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania whose offices are at Lehigh University, says 1,300 people can thank it, at least partly, for their jobs in the past fiscal year. The state-funded agency, which offers loans to aid companies that develop new technologies, said its efforts helped companies create or retain 1,300 jobs in 2002-03. The organization also said it helped create 13 new companies and develop 55 new products and processes, according to a news release Tuesday. Ben Franklin center serves 19 counties, reaching the northern tier of the state.

At Lehigh University's Whitaker Lab Auditorium, Two Minutes From Faradis, a satirical look at the Israeli-Arab conflict centering on the relationship of a precocious 17-year-old Jewish girl and her Arab boyfriend, and Aviv, a documentary about the popular Israeli singer who is Moshe Dayan's grandson will be held on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., as part of the Jewish & Israeli Film Series 2004.

Specter Turns Down Valley Debate Offer
U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter said Tuesday that he will debate U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey just one time, in Altoona in April, or not at all. Specter declined a second debate at Lehigh University offered by The Morning Call, NBC 10 and the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania. Toomey, who represents the Lehigh Valley, has accepted the Lehigh University debate but said he wouldn't square off with Specter in Altoona if that was the only venue.
