Shedding Light on the Mystery of Cloudy Wineglasses
Himanshu Jain, Diamond professor and chair of materials science and engineering at Lehigh, was interviewed about his research into the mystery of cloudy wine glasses. The NBC affiliate in western Illinois/eastern Iowa is one of many stations around the country receiving this story. According to Jain, wineglasses may appear to have a rainbow coloring--called iridescence-that gives the impression that oil is left on the glass, but it is in the glass itself, and has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the glassware. Tiny scratches make your glass cloudy because light gets spread out as it passes through the glass at different angles . . .and although detergents play a role, there is no proof that pricier cleaners protect better, either, Jain says. If you really have a valuable piece of glass and you don't want it to deteriorate, I think the solution is to hand wash.

Cold Political Wind Blows Across Russia; Intolerance and Chechnya War Chill Democracy
Rajan Menon, professor of international relations at Lehigh, wrote an Op-Ed about the future of Russia. “In just a month, Russian voters will elect their next president in what would appear to be a welcome sign of the consolidation of Russian democracy,” Menon writes. “But beneath the surface of electoral politics – not very far beneath – there are disturbing signs that the foundation of Russian democracy is beginning to buckle. One measure of democracy’s health is the fate of dissenters. Russia does not fare well in this respect.”

Lehigh University adjunct professor of sociology and anthropology Andrew McIntosh was mentioned in an article about the hip-hop culture. McIntosh said it is inaccurate to peg salacious obsessions to rap music. 'To single out rap music as misogynistic would unjustly ignore the rampant fetishism, objectification and disrespect women are subjected to on a daily basis in America,' said McIntosh, who teaches hip-hop culture courses. 'It is interesting to note that KRS-One and his Temple of Hip Hop organization is currently forwarding an idea that the hip-hop movement is essentially feminine in character,' McIntosh said. 'As hip-hop's pioneers were often the children of dedicated single mothers, hip-hop culture embodied this strong independent spirit, creating a means of artistic celebration of one's self and their community.'

Biophotonics International Magazine (Circulation: 21,000)
The January 2004 issue of Biophotonics International Magazine carried a feature article on the research of Daniel Ou-Yang, professor of physics, co-director of Lehigh's bioengineering program, and faculty member in the Center for Optical Technologies. Ou-Yang uses optical tweezers to study the mechanical properties of the internal structures of endothelial cells, which line the inside of blood vessels. Biophotonics International covers photonic products and research techniques, and is aimed at researchers, product developers, clinical users, physicians and others in medicine and biotechnology.

Richie Forman signed a letter of intent to play football at Lehigh University. Lehigh University has a solid Division I-AA football program, and Forman, a member of the National Honor Society, was also drawn to the school for its academics. Once he made the trip, he knew it was where he was going to spend the next four years. I picked Lehigh because when I went up to visit, they made me feel like it was home, said Forman. It felt like the right place for me. I always dreamed about playing in college. I kind of always knew in the back of my mind that if I kept working hard I would play somewhere.

Bethlehem Catholic's Donchez Picks Lehigh
Bethlehem Catholic's Pete Donchez will be exchanging his Golden Hawks football jersey for a Mountain Hawks jersey this fall. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior tight end revealed he plans to continue his career at Lehigh University. I think it's a good choice, Bethlehem Catholic coach Chuck Sonon said. It's a great school, and the football team does a lot of things with throwing the ball.
