In Special Ed, Silence Speaks Volumes
Perry Zirkel, University Professor of Education and Law in the College of Education at Lehigh, provided commentary for an article about a 15-year-old Dallas high school student who suffers from third-degree burns, an injury his parents believe was caused by someone at his high school. Special education experts like Zirkel say Leo’s case is not unusual. “Resolution of these things in terms of truth and remedies is very difficult,” said Zirkel, who has studied hundreds of civil cases in which parents challenge a school district's treatment of their disabled children.

Democrats Losing Influence, but Remain a Key Player
Frank Colon, professor of political science at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on the extinction of political parties. “The Democrats have become what the Republican Party used to be – somewhat sectional. Strengths seem to be on the coasts and in the middle – Wisconsin, Minnesota,” Colon said. “One of the things they’re going to have to think about is how to handle the Midwest and the South. They don’t seem to be doing particularly well in those states.”

Monsoon Over Manhattan
Ricardo Viera, professor of art at Lehigh and director/curator of the university’s art galleries and museum, was quoted in an article about the art gallery on Bethlehem’s SouthSide called Monsoon. He said he believes Monsoon is a critical addition to the growing SouthSide. “Art is so broad and (there are) so many different tastes and opinions and different ways of looking at art that it’s very exciting to have this kind of gallery in the Lehigh Valley,” Viera said.

Frank Pazzaglia, associate professor of earth and environmental science at Lehigh, co-authored a study titled, “Geomorphic expression of active tectonics in a rapidly-deforming forearc, sila massif, Calabria, southern Italy.” The study examined the tectonic geomorphology of La Sila, Calabria, southern Italy, a high-standing (1500 m) plateau surrounded by crustal extension, with map, DEM, and field data. Pazzaglia and fellow researchers concluded in the study that the Calabrian forearc has a similar geographic evolution as the more northern Apennines consistent with the emerging view that growth of Apennine topography has been recent (Quaternary), rapid, and possibly decoupled from rock deformation in the orogenic wedge.

Web Site Touts Events and Attractions of “College Valley”
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about local colleges and universities participating in a campaign to draw youth to study and stay in the area. A publicity campaign to portray the Lehigh Valley as one large college town kicked off Monday with the creation of a Web site intended to attract prospective students to the area. The participating schools are Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Lehigh Carbon Community College and Northampton Community College. The site, http://www.collegevalleypa.com , is the first in a series of events and advertisements promoting social and cultural events — along with six four-year colleges and two community colleges — in the Valley.

Da Vinci Discovery Center Unveils Plan to Build Allentown Facility
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article on the Da Vinci Discovery Center’s plans to build an Allentown facility. In 1995, the Discovery Center grew out of a project offering hands-on science activities that began as a nonprofit corporation of Lehigh University. In 1996, the center moved from a leased space in south Bethlehem to a former Bethlehem Steel plant building, and in 1999, separated from Lehigh. The new building is expected to be completed in the fall of 2005. The Da Vinci Discovery Center of Science and Technology needs to raise nearly $2 million to build its Allentown facility, center officials announced Monday when they unveiled plans for the $10.8 million interactive, educational building.

Developer Planning Art Center for Easton
Lehigh University engineering majors were mentioned in an article about how Theodore Kheel bought the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1290 to convert it to an art and culture center. The goal of Experiments in Art and Technology is to put together artists with new technologies such as using stainless steel as a canvas, painting with translucent fire wax, incorporating sonar and radios in interactive works, and working with video and lasers. Artists involved said they hope to involve Lehigh Valley technical students, such as engineering majors at Lehigh University, in the creation and research of new art forms.
