Scientist: Nanoscale Iron Could Treat Contaminated Soil, Water In Situ
Research by Wei-xian Zhang, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Lehigh, continues to gain media attention. Zhang has discovered that an ultrafine nanoscale powder made from iron could effectively solve some of the most difficult remediation challenges. We're entering a phase of exponential growth, says Zhang. There are thousands and thousands of contaminated sites out there. And hopefully, this will be a cost-effective way to deal with many of them.

With Optical 'Tweezers,' Researchers Pinpoint The Rhythmic Rigidity Of Cell Skeletons
Daniel Ou-Yang's breakthrough laser tool known as optical tweezers continues to gain media attention. Ou-Yang, professor of physics, co-director of Lehigh's bioengineering program and a member of Lehigh's Center for Optical Technologies and his group are the first to study the interior of an endothelial cell in a non-invasive way without introducing foreign particles into the cell or around it.

Best of the Best
Jeylan Erman, who currently takes classes at Lehigh, is ranked first in her senior class of 439 students at Freedom High School and is this week's recipient of the ''Best of the Best'' award. Erman is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for International Studies, and she speaks Turkish, German and Spanish and spent a summer as an exchange student in Germany.

Plan Ahead: Cathedral Choral's 'Messiah'
Dec. 14 will mark the 40th time that the Cathedral Choral Society gives a holiday presentation of Handel's Messiah at 7 p.m. at Packer Chapel. The 60-member choir, directed by Russell Jackson, traditionally performs the full Christmas portion of the work and excerpts the second half.

Jack Lule, professor of journalism and communication at Lehigh, was interviewed for a story on Bill O'Reilly and conservative talk radio. I don't mind O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh, but I see them as entertainers, said Jack Lule, chairman of the journalism department at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. I don't think they can be called journalists.

The President of Texas A&M University at College Station said on Wednesday that he does not want to use race as a factor in determining undergraduate admissions or financial-aid awards. That policy, which the university's Board of Regents is expected to approve today, runs counter to the plans of other universities in the state.
