Northern Lehigh football coach Jim Tkach, who coached at Lehigh for three years, credits part of his team's push to its first PIAA Class AA football championship appearance to his former colleague at Lehigh, John Whitehead. Tkach employed a no-huddle offense as a surprise tactic against a bigger Lakeland team. Whitehead sometimes used the same system at Lehigh to catch opponents off guard.

With Optical ’Tweezers,’ Researchers Pinpoint the Rhythmic Rigidity of Cell Skeletons
Research by Daniel Ou-Yang, professor of physics and co-director of Lehigh's bioengineering program, is the first to use a laser tool known as optical tweezers to study the interior of an endothelial cell in a non-invasive way without introducing foreign particles into the cell or around it. This rhythm tells us something is alive, says Ou-Yang. But it raises other questions. What triggers this rhythm? And what is its significance?

Patriot League basketball returns to DIRECTV on Channel 615 on Friday, Jan. 23, featuring one of the League's oldest rivalries - Lehigh at Lafayette. When the teams get together, it will mark the 199th meeting (Lafayette leads the series 131-67) between the two schools. Lafayette has dominated the Mountain Hawks in the Fran O'Hanlon era, posting a record of 13-5. Second-year Lehigh head coach Billy Taylor will try to notch his first win at the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center in Easton, Pa.

Valley Antismoking Advocates Recognized for Deeds
One Lehigh staff member and five Lehigh students received awards at the Smoke Free Valley's Freedom Leadership Awards breakfast Wednesday at the Radisson Hotel Bethlehem. The College Policy Advocate Award was presented to Marie Brown, nurse educator at Lehigh University. And the College Peer Educator Award was presented to the Fresh Airs of Lehigh University, comprised of Lehigh students Mark Gottesfeld, Sarah Greenberg, Linsey Kramer, Siaw Mei Lo, Kathleen Mish and Julie Ottaiano.

The Best of Beethoven
Several weeks ago, the Lehigh University Philharmonic Orchestra performed a concert dedicated to the French composer Hector Berlioz on the occasion of his 200th birthday. It was a solid performance of the composer's typically complex compositions, including his challenging Symphonie Fantastique. On Friday and Saturday, the students, under the leadership of violinist and conductor Paul Chou, will offer an All-Beethoven program in honor of the ensemble's 10th anniversary. (Scroll down)

It's not often that one thinks of a company founded in the 19th century as part of New Pittsburgh. But don't tell that to Lehigh graduate Carl Snyder, who last summer took over as president and chief executive officer of Dawar Technologies Inc., a North Side manufacturer of products used in medical and industrial equipment and control systems.

Like every other professor in the history department at Penn, Irwin Marcus, who got his doctorate at Lehigh, comes in every morning, talks with his colleagues, helps students and does some administrative tasks. Although he has no formal responsibilities, everyday he makes his way into Keith Hall. Marcus, a history professor of U.S. working-class history for 37 years, retired two years ago. Yet, he continues to spend his days in the department.
