Lehigh men's basketball coach Billy Taylor was proud of the Mountain Hawks after they put up a great fight against the third-ranked UConn Huskies. The Huskies shot poorly in a sloppy first half and allowed the Mountain Hawks to stay close early Monday night in the game that ended with a 75-55 UConn win. Lehigh coach Billy Taylor said his team tried all night to control the tempo and keep the Huskies off-balance but couldn't overcome UConn's size and athleticism. I was proud of our effort, he said. Disappointed that we lost, but I like a lot of the things we did.

Lehigh Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program Lauded
The man who led Lehigh University's effort to shed its party school image and curb alcohol abuse on the Bethlehem campus has received a national award. John Smeaton, vice provost for student affairs, received the American Public Health Association's college-based leadership award Nov. 18 in San Francisco. (Smeaton) turned Lehigh into a model of university commitment to handling alcohol problems in a collaborative, planned, persistent fashion, said Andre Stanley, chairman of the awards committee, in a statement. ''We feel the most pleased that we've been able to reduce the likelihood of students putting themselves at risk or others at harm as a result of alcohol abuse,'' Smeaton said.

Steel Tariff Repeal Won't Cause Trouble for Retirees
Mary E. Deily, associate professor of economics at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on the effects President Bush's reported decision to repeal tariffs on steel imports will have on the Lehigh Valley. Deily said Steel retirees really won't be harmed if the tariffs disappear. They've been pummeled as bad as they can be pummeled, she said.
