Mothers Better at Baby Talk Than Men, Study Says
Research by Gerald McRoberts, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Lehigh, continues to gain media attention, this time internationally. McRoberts, together with Malcolm Slaney, of IBM's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California, designed a computer program to study how voice pitch, rhythm and stress communicate meaning. Results suggest that mother's coochy-coos are less ambiguous than dad's.

Restitution: Another Two-Way Street in School Cases?
Perry A. Zirkel, University Professor of Education and Law at Lehigh University wrote an article on Minnesota’s Pupil Fair Dismissal Act in regards to a specific case where a staff member at Southland High School discovered a bomb threat scrawled with marker on a mirror in the boys' bathroom. The student accused of making the threat was expelled and received tutoring as a result of the Act. Although (this case) may not be charting new territory within the usual world of criminal restitution statutes, the classification of public schools as 'victims' and the recovery of attorney's fees along with tutoring costs is remarkable within the special world of school law, Zirkel wrote.

It’s Not the Sensor; It’s the Motion
Researchers at the Energy Research Center (ERC) at Lehigh performed work on the flow measurement and dilution probe accuracy issues and approaches to improve measurement performance of stock flow instrumentation and dilution extractive probes. As part of the process of reporting emissions of NOx and SO2 to comply with federal and state clean air regulatory requirements, U.S. utilities are required to use continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) systems to measure and calculate mass pollutant emissions.

Henri Barkey, chairman of the International Relations Department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on the ripple effects of the prospective trial on Saddam Hussein. Barkey said he agrees that the United States has more riding on the eventual trial of Saddam than many people realize. If the Iraqis responsibly bring Saddam to justice, he said, “then the impact of Saddam going on trial, and publicly confronting his victims and the evidence of his crimes, could [be] very favorable…. On the other hand, if we screw this up, and somehow give Saddam the legitimacy of victimhood, the damage could be very, very profound.”

Marc Wilson, a Philadelphia high school teacher, started helping the step team at Broughal Middle School in Bethlehem with their routines in 1997, while he was an administrator at Lehigh University. He and other members of Kappa Alpha Psi, who show off their signature cane-twirling move every year at national step shows such as the Penn Relays, worked with the Broughal steppers as part of the fraternity's national service program.
