Perry A. Zirkel, professor of educational leadership at Lehigh, wrote an article on a specific case where a state court judge was accused of manipulating the special education laws to secure unfair advantages that would allow his daughter, who had a disability, to be the high school valedictorian. This story illustrates the limits of the (Individuals with Disabilities Act), wrote Zirkel. Even though they were 'successful' in court, Judge Hornstine and his daughter might be characterized as being in the same metaphorical predicament as the district.

The Journal of Supply Chain Management
Robert J. Trent, associate professor of management and director of the supply chain management program at Lehigh, co-wrote a paper entitled Internal Purchasing and Global Sourcing--What are the Differences?' The findings of the study will help supply managers better understand what it takes to shift from basic international purchasing to integrated global sourcing strategies and approaches, the paper said.

Comments made by Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, concerning the latest plan to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq were picked up by the Deseret News. All of (the Iraqis') activities are now designed to better their bargaining position for afterwards, not to help the United States right now, Barkey said. It's not necessarily because they're mean, but because the stakes are so high.

Educational Web Sites: A Classification System for Educators and Learners
Yufeng Qian, a graduate student and teaching assistant in modern languages and literature at Lehigh, co-wrote an article on the increasing use of the World Wide Web by educators and individual learners. Every Web user is a potential publisher, and individuals and groups across all geographic boundaries and all ideological viewpoints are creating 'educational' materials for the Web, the article wrote.

AIDS Day Events Educate Region
Lehigh students were among presenters at a silent auction hosted by the Bethlehem Health Bureau on Dec. 1 to benefit area families affected by AIDS. The benefit coincides with World AIDS Day, an annual event sponsored by the National AIDS Trust to increase awareness of HIV-related stigma and discrimination.

Graceanne Allen, a Stroudsburg High School Junior, and Jenna Warner, a Lehigh University Junior recently performed with the Lehigh University Symphony Orchestra in a performance at Stroudsburg High School. Both students were inspired to take violin lessons with the orchestra's conductor violinist Paul Chou, associate professor of music, after watching a similar concert in 1999. It's special for me because it allows me to take my music home, said Warner.

The company, which has seen many ups and downs (including virtually bankruptcy in 1997) is now doing tremendously well.
