Lehigh University Celebrates Centennial With a Look at Past, Present, Future
Lehigh University's department of chemical engineering celebrated the centennial of its founding this fall with two days of festivities, and then returned to what department chairman Anthony McHugh calls the 'O' revolution that is sweeping the field. Chemical engineering education, like engineering in general, is undergoing an 'O' revolution in bio, opto, nano and info, says McHugh, referring to bioengineering, optical technologies, nanotechnology and information technology.

Two international students attending Lehigh were interviewed on WZZO earlier this week. They talked about what they would be doing over break, and each noted efforts by the Office of International Students and Scholars to offer trips, luncheons and other activities over break to keep them busy and make them feel at home while they are away from their families.

Towards 10 Gigabits Per Second: Lehigh Group Reports Best Threshold Values For Near-infrared Range Lasers
Research at Lehigh has made high-performance, vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) produced with vapor deposition and capable of operating with a 13000-nm wavelength a step closer to reality. Nelson Tansu, 26, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Lehigh, and his colleagues have reported the best threshold values to date for near-infrared-range (with an emission wavelength of 1300-nm), indium-gallium-arsenide-nitride (InGaAsN) lasers that emit from a quantum well. Using dilute-nitride grown on a gallium-arsenide base, says Tansu, it is much easier to make the high-performance reflectors that are critical to achieving high-performance VCSELs. We accomplished this by using MOCVD, which is also known as MOVPE [Metal-Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy].

HS Sidelines: Champion Chinn Chooses Lehigh
Trevor Chinn won’t leave Canandaigua Academy without the state wrestling championship he chased for years. Or without a place to wrestle after he graduates. The senior plans to join the Division I program at Lehigh. Chinn, ranked fourth nationally among 140-pounders by Wrestling USA Magazine, also considered attending West Virginia, Columbia and the State University at Buffalo, but the chance to become a Mountain Hawk was too tempting. Lehigh is third in the latest national team rankings and is led by former Olympic coach Greg Strobel, whose assistants also have credentials that are difficult to match.

Student EMTs are Gaining Exposure as they Provide First Aid
Lehigh is one of 14 Pennsylvania colleges that belong to the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation. When an emergency is reported to campus police, three students from the emergency service typically respond. ''My guys know when to back off because they're properly trained,'' said Lehigh University Police Chief Edward Shupp.

Verizon Foundation has given a $15,000 grant to the Lehigh University S.T.A.R Academies, an organization that works to develop students intellectually, socially, spiritually and emotionally to become productive citizens. Founded in 1989, S.T.A.R. stands for Students That Are Ready and is a year-round program designed to prepare area students for college. More than 140 students in grades 4 through 12 from 29 area schools are enrolled in the program.
