Expert in Optimization, David Wu, Appointed Dean
David Wu, Iacocca Professor and chair of the industrial and systems engineering department at Lehigh, has been named dean of the university's P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. Wu's appointment was announced by Mohamed El-Aasser, who served as Lehigh's engineering dean before his appointment Nov. 1 as university provost. I believe David Wu will be an outstanding dean, said El-Aasser. In six years as chair of industrial and systems engineering (ISE), he has overseen a marked improvement in his department's national reputation. He has also earned a reputation as an effective mentor of new faculty and graduate students while gaining international renown for his research in optimization, logistics and supply chain modeling. I am confident that, with his team-building leadership style, David will help take the Rossin College and the university to the next level of educational excellence.

The article discussed people who spread the gospel of regular exercise—researchers, physical therapists, nutritionists, fitness authors. But with everything else going on in their lives, even the most devoted experts sometimes find it hard to motivate themselves. “I always buy two pairs of workout clothes at a time, so I can keep a bag of clothes in my car and another set at home. And I keep my shoes near the door, where I trip on them when I go out—another reminder to exercise,” White said. “My research has shown that one of the key things is to find the exercise that matches your needs. If you’re looking for time for yourself and a chance to reflect, a gym routine or walking are options. If you’re social and prefer a collaborative environment, try to find a team sport or class you like.”

Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, appeared as a guest on the Mike Pentex show on December 15. He discussed Dover Area School District parents’ decision to file a federal lawsuit aimed at blocking the Dover Area School Board's teaching of intelligent design in a ninth-grade biology course. The Dover board voted 6-3 in October to require teachers to present intelligent design theory as an alternative to evolution, which must be taught under state academic standards. Perhaps the best-known scientist in the intelligent design movement is Behe. Behe agrees that living things evolved from common ancestors, but he says Charles Darwin's description of how evolution occurs -- natural selection among random mutations -- cannot explain the complexity he observes as a biochemist.

But American companies have been investing massively in China for some time now.”

Perry A. Zirkel, University Professor of Education and Law in the College of Education at Lehigh, wrote an article for the December 2004 issue of Phi Delta Kappan. After being passed over for the position of boy's varsity basketball coach in favor of a much less experienced male colleague, Geraldine Fuhr filed suit in federal district court, alleging that the school district had engaged in sex discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The overriding lesson of this case is to beware of sex stereotypes, whether in school or on the court; otherwise, you'll go to school in court. Women have broken the glass ceiling with regard to the superintendency and the high school principalship. The remaining goals are the head coach positions for boys' basketball and ultimately, football.

Lehigh TE Bergen is All-American Again
Adam Bergen, Lehigh University's senior tight end, said he has been having a good time. On Tuesday, it was The Sports Network. On Wednesday it was the Associated Press and on Thursday, the American Football Coaches Association made it a clean sweep. ''It's not a huge shock,'' he said. ''Coming into this season I expected to be the best tight end in Division I-AA. I worked hard to become the best. Still, it's nice to be recognized. The words 'All-America' have a nice ring to them.'' So does the phrase ''NFL prospect.'' That's Bergen's focus now. He is excited about participating in the East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco Jan. 15. ''It's a chance to show what I can do while on the same field with the All-Americans from places like Miami and USC,'' Bergen said.

Ben Franklin Providing $574,250
Ben Franklin Technology Partners announced Thursday $574,250 in support of regional economic development, including $300,000 for two Lehigh Valley companies. Ben Franklin will lend $150,000 to Online Staffing Solutions of Allentown. The company is in the Bridgeworks Enterprise Center at 905 Harrison St., an incubation center for startup businesses. Ben Franklin also will lend $150,000 to PeopleForce. The startup company employs two full-time workers in the Ben Franklin Business Incubator at 115 Research Drive in Bethlehem.
