Red Shirt or Red Flag?
Lehigh wrestler Jon Trenge and Lehigh wrestling coach Greg Strobel were quoted in a story about student athletes taking a year off to pursue the Olympics. This year's redshirting wrestlers includes Jon Trenge of Lehigh University, who has publicly indicated he will seek the waiver. He already has competed for at least one year his institution and has qualified at least once for the Division I national meet. Is he ready for Olympic competition? If you look at the history of who makes the Olympic teams, the last (collegiate) freestyle athlete who made the team was back in 1988, said Strobel, referring to Oklahoma State University Olympic gold medalist John Smith. The chance of a college-eligible kid making the team is very slim. Most of the team is made up of guys in their late 20s or early 30s, because it takes that long to really do that.
