What Every Parent Needs to Know about ADHD
Research by George DuPaul, professor and program coordinator, School Psychology Program in the College of Education, was featured in an article appearing in the January 2004 issue of Prevention magazine, the #1 consumer health magazine in the country. The key is identifying preschoolers who may be at risk, then teaching their parents and teachers new skills--including firm (yet calm) discipline, anger and impulse control, and social awareness, says DuPaul, director of the innovative new ADHD prevention program. This helps the child reduce hyperactivity and gain better focus. DuPaul's approach could reduce, eliminate, or delay the need for ADHD drugs.

A Ho-Hum Election Solidifies Putin's Power
Rajan Menon, professor of international relations at Lehigh University, wrote an article on the recent elections that secured Putin's power in Russia. Despite its scripted outcome, Russia's election is hardly unimportant. Putin's party will dominate the Duma, the lower house of parliament, wrote Menon. Together with independents, the ultranationalist Liberal Democratic Party (which has been a reliable ally of Putin) and the Motherland Party (conjured up by the Kremlin some months ago to drain votes from the Communists), it will control almost 60 percent of the votes in parliament. That's enough to make the preferences of Putin and the Duma essentially identical.

According to results of a three-year study by researchers at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., glasses washed in solutions with 7 grams and 1.5 grams of sodium disilicate for each liter became visibly corroded around the center of the bowl where the defects had shown under the microscope before washing. Glasses cleaned as many as 100 times with detergents containing no sodium disilicate remained clear and transparent, the study report said. However, the study team said, the most aggressive dishwashing solutions did not result in the most visible scratching but caused the entire glass to become thinner, leading to possible eventual breakage in the dishwasher.

Lehigh University junior Lindsay Hinsch, a Sidney graduate, placed second in three events against visiting Millersville on Friday in an indoor track meet. Hinsch took second in the long jump, 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Hinsch's time in the 200 was 27.2 seconds. She long jumped 17 feet, 2 3/4 inches.

Indian Scientist Develops Device to Remove Arsenic from Well Water
Arup Sengupta, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, has developed a simple and inexpensive well-head unit that removes arsenic from well water. He has installed his unit in more than 100 village-drinking wells near the cities of Howrah and Kolkata. The crisis, says Sengupta, who grew up in West Bengal, is the biggest natural calamity of our time. Like many environmental problems in developing countries, he says, it cries out for a homegrown solution.

With flu season upon us and a recent increase in reported cases of staph infections among athletes nationwide, it is more important than ever to know the differences between the two, said Jack Foley, director of sports medicine at Lehigh University. “When your system starts shutting down like that, it pretty much doesn't matter what they do (at the hospital), Foley said. You can give him all the different kinds of medications, but you're basically robbing Peter to pay Paul.
