Turkey’s Chill Further Isolates Israel
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, wrote an op-ed on Turkish-Israeli relations. In May, when Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan characterized Israel's incursions into the Rafah refugee camp in Gaza as the actions of a terrorist state, there was no mistaking that something had gone terribly awry in Turkish-Israeli relations, Barkey wrote. So numerous were their military agreements and commercial deals that it appeared, certainly in the Arab world, that the two countries were entering a strategic relationship. The worsening situation in the Palestinian territories and the rise of the post-Sept. 11 terrorist threat have contributed to the falling-out. But the transformation in Turkish attitudes also stems from internal developments in Turkey. The change in Turkey-Israeli atmospherics is not a welcome development for Washington, which had hailed and supported the two countries' rapprochement. It means that Washington's role as Israel's lone supporter, and all the attendant consequences, will only grow.

Candi Staurinos, who is employed as a marketing assistant for Lehigh University’s Zoellner Arts Center, is one of the locals who will be attending the Olympics in Athens, Greece. Staurinos will be serving as a sports assistant for the softball competition in Greece. ''I'm in event planning,'' the 28-year-old Macungie resident said. ''I've been involved in big events. In my last job, I did the media center for the New York Marathon, so I'm looking forward to an even bigger event.'' In college, Staurinos did an eight-month internship with Musikfest and spent a semester studying abroad — in Athens. This will be her ninth or 10th trip to Greece.

Get a Better Attitude about the Job Market
Bryan Jones, a senior at Lehigh who is studying finance, wrote a letter to the editor about the job market and the economy. “The job market isn't weak, it's competitive,” he wrote. “Times change. Jobs will not just fall into your lap. Go out and get one for yourself. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a Bachelor's degree and a tub full of dirty dishes. So, for all those people my age looking for something to blame, look no farther than yourselves. My generation must take responsibility for itself.”

Lehigh Coach Strobel Making Trip to Athens as Volunteer
Greg Strobel, the head wrestling coach at Lehigh University, has known all kinds of success. From competing through coaching, Strobel is a standout in the sport. Later this month, Strobel will head to Athens to work the corner of U.S. heavyweight freestyle wrestler Kerry McCoy, one of his assistant coaches as well as the head coach of the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club. Strobel, a two-time NCAA champion at Oregon State, will be in Athens for six days — ''just long enough to take in some of the Greco,'' he said.

Going for the Gold: Olympian Visits County Wresting Camp
Kerry McCoy, assistant wrestling coach at Lehigh University, appeared at the Moore County wrestling camp earlier this summer. After the appearance by McCoy, the thoughts and eyes of over 50 area youth wrestlers are more likely to be tuned in to watch the exploits of McCoy. McCoy is one of the top American wrestlers entered in the Olympics’ freestyle competition. Many experts are looking at him as a serious contender for a gold medal.

McCoy More Focused This Time Around
Earning a spot as the freestyle wrestling heavyweight on the U.S. Olympic Team should have been an automatic for Kerry McCoy, the former Penn State star who serves as an assistant coach at Lehigh University as well as head coach of the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club. McCoy finished fifth at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He finished fourth in the world in 2001 and second last year after the U.S. did not compete in 2002 in Iran because of a credible threat against the team. ''It's a different time,'' McCoy said last month. ''One of the biggest things for me, I don't want to say I had to condition myself to think it, but one of the biggest things I had to do was not focus on making my second Olympic team or returning to the Olympics, but just making it.''

Green Candidates Outline Positions
Lehigh University student Jim Goodley, 21, a candidate for the 131st District, advocates replacing the state tax with a progressive tax. He said his aim particularly is to remedy the unequal tax support for education in poor and rich school districts. Goodley said his party will challenge the ''two-party structure that is more allegiant to the profit interests of land developers and construction firms than to the interests of the majority of its everyday citizens.'' Goodley will face Republican state Rep. Pat Browne of Allentown. There is no Democrat running.
