Laser Writes Ferroelectric Domains in a Confocal Microscope
Volkmar Dierolf, associate professor physics at Lehigh, and Christian Sandmann, Lehigh student, co-wrote an article on confocal microscopes. The team at Lehigh developed a technique to produce strong, local, electric spacecharge fields that enable the inducement of a domain inversion in ferroelectric lithium niobate.

A Growing Classroom
Franklin County Career and Technology Center and Lehigh University have announced a distance education partnership that will allow students in the area to earn Lehigh masters degrees at the FCCTC facility in Chambersburg. Degrees to be offered through the partnership include a master’s in business administration and several engineering-related degrees. A certificate program in supply-chain management will also be available. According to James Duffy, administrative director of FCCTC, the partnership with Lehigh benefits both the FCCTC and the Franklin County community. “With Lehigh being a leading institution in engineering, it provides a way for the local community to access Lehigh without travel,” he said. Lehigh is known around the world for the quality of its engineering programs. Lehigh officials hope the partnership will serve as an attractive alternative for the working professional in the Franklin County area, especially in the engineering sector.

Executive Salary up for Discussion
Frank Colon, professor of political science at Lehigh, was quoted in an article stating that it’s been 10 years since Northampton County’s executive got a raise and the resulting effects on the pool of candidates for his replacement. Colon said a higher salary may broaden the candidate pool, but that does not mean they'll all be top-notch candidates. ''I'm not sure that money alone is the attraction,'' said Colon, who also is an elected official, serving on the Board of Supervisors in Hanover Township, Northampton County. Quality candidates have an interest in public service, he said, and are willing to deal with the politics of the job, which could leave you unemployed after one term. ''It's a question a little bit about security. Politics is not secure,” he said.

Sanderson Gets Scare, McCoy Ousted
Kerry McCoy, assistant wrestling coach at Lehigh, couldn't have been more disappointed on his last day. All was going right for a surprisingly good U.S. freestyle team Friday, with Cael Sanderson, Jamill Kelly and Stephen Abas all going unbeaten, until McCoy unexpectedly took a tumble that left him without a medal for the second straight games. McCoy was tossed by Marid Mutalimov of Kazakhstan 11 seconds into overtime, a 3-point move that sent Mutalimov into the medal round at 264 1/2 pounds (120kg) and a somber McCoy home to Bethlehem, Pa. He announced his retirement immediately afterward, saying, It was just not meant to be for me to win an Olympic medal. I didn't make it happen…I just know I'm done with wrestling, and I don't have to put up with this any more. ... I'm happy to be done, and just move on to other things. It's terrible to lose. McCoy beat Mutalimov 5-0 in last year's world championships, but wrestled more tentatively than he did then. He was nervous. He was all nerves, said Greg Strobel, McCoy's coach. The guy kept poking him in the eye and he probably should have been given a couple of penalty points. But McCoy didn't make a mistake (in overtime)-- the other guy just went out first.

After Lehigh University assistant coach Kerry McCoy lost in his pool in the 120-kilogram freestyle wrestling, it ended the medal chances for our Lehigh Valley athletes. Morning Call Sports Reporter Gary Blockus, on assignment in Athens, said that on a very personal note, the saddest moment for him was Kerry's loss. He is a true gentleman and role model. I admire his honesty, his directness, his determination and his faith, and to see him fall short of his dream left me deflated. What inflated me, however, was seeing Kerry just minutes after his match, talking to reporters with no regrets, just straight forward as is his usual manner. He is a credit not just to his sport, but to all athletes.
