U.S.: Washington Denies Policy Shift on Israeli Settlement Activity
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about the Bush administration’s commitment to a freeze of all settlement activity in Israel’s occupied territories, a crucial part of the dormant Middle East peach plan. Barkey tells RFE/RL that the Bush administration appears to have made a cautious gamble to support some of Sharon’s West Bank actions to help him move ahead with the Gaze withdrawal plans. “That seems to be the bargain [the U.S. administration is] striking. The problem, unfortunately, is that we are stuck in a situation where nothing is moving without the Gaza plan. There is no initiative coming from the Palestinians or the Arab world at the moment that is worth looking at,” Barkey said.

Perry Zirkel, professor of law and education in the College of Education, was quoted in an article about the increasing demand on special education. Special education is making us rethink what education is, Zirkel says. Educators agree that education expands beyond books, he says, but opinions differ across districts on where the line should be drawn. Is it just reading, writing, and arithmetic? Or [should education be] interpreted more broadly to include interaction with others and social skills? he asks. These have become important questions as budgets tighten in schools across the country and the diagnosis of learning disabilities soars in both number and variety.

Lehigh University Named Nongovernmental Agency
The United Nations named Lehigh University a non-governmental organization Monday, making it the 11th university to gain that status. As a result of its new title, the university will be able to take students to U.N. conferences and private briefings by U.N. officials and also host ambassadors and other U.N. delegates and officials on campus for presentations. ''With Lehigh becoming an NGO, our faculty, staff and students now have a link to one of the world's leading organizations … Now our students will hear about global issues straight from people who make global decisions,'' university President Greg Farrington said in a written statement. ''Lehigh University has conducted numerous
United Nations-related programs and events over the last five years, so becoming an NGO is a natural progression,'' said William Hunter, director of the university's office of international students and scholars.
