Kerry Courts Seniors in Nevada
Laura Katz Olson, political science professor at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about John Kerry’s speech to senior citizens in Nevada. With both parties courting what is sometimes referred to as the gray lobby, Olson, who specializes in seniors, cautioned against assuming that senior citizens would base votes on any one issue. In addition to health care and drugs, they tend to be antiwar and concerned with the economy, she said. There's a diversity of views, and they don't just vote as a block.

Timing of Warrants for Chalabis Questioned
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted once again in an article about an Iraqi judge issuing charges against Ahmed Chalabi for counterfeiting and lawyer Salem Chalabi for murder. These charges provoked a dizzying array of questions yesterday among both Iraqis and U.S. officials -- and even fueled some suspicion that the warrants may have been designed in part to affect the country's politics at a pivotal moment in its transition. An Iraqi judge charged the two men simultaneously Sunday when both were out of the country. This is Allawi establishing political control and taking decisive action on many fronts to show he's in charge,” Barkey said.

Grad Students Select Best Pizza at Lehigh
In April, dozens of graduate students at Lehigh filled the catacombs of Packer Memorial Church for a Pizza Taste-Off. The event was hosted by the Office of Graduate Student Life in celebration of Graduate Student Appreciation Week. A panel of 13 graduate students and two special guests – Ron Yoshida, university provost, and Perry Zirkel, professor of educational leadership – conducted judging for the Taste-Off. For Yoshida and Zirkel, the contest was familiar turf. The pair, known then as the “Pepperoni Professors,” wrote reviews of local pizzerias for the campus newspaper between 1997 and 2000. “When I became a dean, a lot of students didn’t know about the College of Education,” Yoshida said. “So how else are we going to get known? Review pizzas! It was that silly, but it paid off.”

U.S. Women Wrestlers Know They Have Long Road
Kerry McCoy and Jon Trenge were mentioned in an article about how the acceptance of women wrestling in the Olympics will be tough. ''It's funny, but the bigger guys will help us,'' said Sara McMann, the 63-kilo representative for the U.S. who has lifted in the weight room at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Colorado with Parkland High graduate Jon Trenge. Trenge took last year off from Lehigh and lived as a resident athlete at the OTC in hopes of making the 2004 U.S. Olympic freestyle team. ''He's big, but he'll help,'' she continued. ''Even Kerry McCoy will come in and work technique with us.'' McCoy, of course, is the current Lehigh University assistant coach, and head coach of the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club, who will represent the U.S. as the freestyle heavyweight during the final few days of the Athens Games.
