U.S. News and World Report (Circulation: 2,018,621)
The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science and the College of Education continue to rank among the best graduate schools in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2005 Best Graduate School rankings released on April 2. Engineering ranks 37th and education ranks 38th in their respective areas. Both colleges ranked 41st last year.

I-280 Bridge Update
Lehigh was mentioned in a story about receiving sections of the truss from the I-280 bridge accident. The first phase of the site recovery, to clear and stabilize enough material to allow for safe forensic investigation and the resumption of traffic on I-280, was completed March 12. Sections of the truss have been sent to Lehigh University for forensic examination and testing. These results will be issued as a part of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration report.

Putting Broken Georgia Back Together Again
Rajan Menon, Monroe J. Rathbone professor of international relations at Lehigh University, wrote an article on Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. Saakashvili had better savor his party's overwhelming victory in last Sunday's parliamentary elections, because his chances for similar triumphs as he tackles his country's serious and longstanding problems are clouded, Menon wrote. The parliamentary elections significantly increased Saakashvili's political capital, but there are many ways in which his account could be drawn down — and rapidly. Georgia's seemingly intractable problems can easily transform heroes into villains. Just ask Shevardnadze.

Squirrels’ Rankings are Nut-In-Cheek
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about campus squirrel ratings. Based on anecdotal evidence from observers that include students, graduates and others, Jon Gottshall assigns rankings that range from a 5-squirrel best to a 1-squirrel worst. Spots of squirrel heaven include the University of California at Berkeley, Rice University, Lehigh University and the U.S. Naval Academy, the article said.

Old Practices Won’t Cultivate Innovation
When we think about the economic future of the Lehigh Valley, the matter of why bright young people are leaving is important. A Lehigh University student coming off an internship expressed poignantly the situation. He said he felt like a small speck in a sea of cubicles. He was given a project but had no idea who wanted it or why. Is it any wonder that this student swore he would never work for that organization or any like it again?

Art Exhibits
The Bridge -- A journey through illness: Two physicians -- artist Rick Levinson and poet Marc Straus -- collaborate in an exhibition of art, sculpture, video and poetry that allows a rare glimpse into a patient's journey from health to illness. The installation draws from a collection of Straus's poems, The Bridge. The exhibit opens Wednesday and runs through June 20 at Zoellner Arts Center
Killing Ground: Photographs of the Civil War and Changing American Landscape: Photography by John Huddleston. Archival Civil War iUpon a Time in Havana Harbor: The U.S.S. Maine: Vintage prints made from glass lantern slides of the 1890s, with scenes of Cuba and the battleship Maine, and those who manned her. Included are ship's artifacts from the Robert Sayre collection. Guest curator: Patricia McAndrew. Runs through June 30 in Dubois Gallery, Maginnes Hall.
Discovery: New and Emerging Photography: Six artist/photographers as diverse as their work--Nestor Arenas, Sheila Basu, Berrisford Boothe, Adrian Lopez, Juan Martin, Gladys Triana. Runs through May 7 in Iacocca Hall.
