Wrong Choice of Running Mate can be Deadly to Campaign
Brian Pinaire, assistant professor of political science at Lehigh University, was quoted in an article about how a vice presidential running mate who turns into a vice presidential disaster. “Quayle typifies the danger of what can happen when the vice president becomes a real drag on the ticket,” says Pinaire. “I’m not sure how much they vetted him, but I don't think they knew how inarticulate he was. He turned into a late-night joke.”

National School Law Experts Visit Delaware
Perry Zirkel, professor of educational leadership at Lehigh, presented a workshop entitled “How Do We Determine Who Is Eligible for 504 Plans?” and a general session entitled, “Legal Issues in Public Education on the Radar Screen” on April 1 in the DuPont Building at Wesley College in Dover. He has written more than 925 publications on various aspects of school law and has made presentations on the topic across the country.

Thomas L. Koch, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Lehigh and also director of the Center for Optical Technology, was guest speaker at the Lehigh Valley Engineering Council’s National Engineers Week banquet held at the Radisson Hotel in Bethlehem on February 20. In discussing the university’s center, he reported that a major addition will be built. “We’re going to break ground on the new facility in a month or two,” he said.

Henry Odi, executive director of academic outreach and special projects at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about early childhood education. The result of early intervention is adults who “give to the community instead of taking away from the community,” he said. He urged parents, teachers, community organizations, industry and government agencies and politicians to join as partners in the investment in education.

Colleges Pumping Up Gyms
Lehigh University built a climbing wall and renovated a weight training facility for the college's varsity teams in 2002. The latest in a string of new, multimillion dollar, state-of-the-art college gyms in the Lehigh Valley, the sports center is part of a fitness facility frenzy that recently has developed on American campuses in an outright bid to attract students. Like residence and dining halls, recreational centers can sway a prospective student's decision whether to enroll, college admissions officers say.

Judge Marjorie Rendell, Pennsylvania's first lady, will be the keynote speaker at the annual dinner of the Bethlehem Business Council of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce to be held Thursday, May 13 at Lehigh University's Mountaintop Campus. Rendell has been a mediator for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and was inducted to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1994. She has been a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit since 1997.

Killing Ground: Photographs of the Civil War and Changing American Landscape: Photography by John Huddleston. Archival Civil War iOnce Upon a Time in Havana Harbor: The U.S.S. Maine: Vintage prints made from glass lantern slides of the 1890s, with scenes of Cuba and the battleship Maine, and those who manned her. Included are ship's artifacts from the Robert Sayre collection. Guest curator: Patricia McAndrew. Through June 30 in Maginnes Hall. Discovery: New and Emerging Photography: Six artist/photographers as diverse as their work Nestor Arenas, Sheila Basu, Berrisford Boothe, Adrian Lopez, Juan Martin, Gladys Triana. The Bridge -- A journey through illness: Artist Rick Levinson and poet Marc Straus, both physicians, collaborate in an exhibition of art, sculpture, video and poetry that allows a rare glimpse into a patient's journey from health to illness. The installation draws from a collection of Straus's poems, The Bridge. Poetry reading 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Artist's reception: 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 30. Through June 20 in Zoellner Arts Center.
