Sally Handlon, program director for business education and training at the Lehigh University Small Business Development Center (SBDC), was recently named U.S. Small Business Administration Women in Business Advocate of the Year. Handlon has more than 30 years' experience in the Lehigh Valley small business community as a banker, entrepreneur and as program director at the SBDC. Handlon has created a series of Women in Business workshops in conjunction with National Penn Bank. As an advocate for women-owned businesses, Handlon has assisted many women-owned business ventures in finding resources to help them operate.

Madvac Comes Sweeping into Bethlehem
Madvac 300, a sidewalk vacuum donated to the city of Bethlehem by Lehigh University, was dedicated Saturday by Mayor John B. Callahan and Lehigh University President Greg Farrington, and will begin sweeping weekdays. With a top speed of 6 mph, the $20,000 Madvac is capable of sweeping thousands of feet of sidewalk a day and will begin sweeping on weekdays. “Lehigh has been a tremendous partner with the city, said Callahan, and he added that the city's partnership with Lehigh for the renaissance of the city, particularly the South Side, will continue. Farrington made a concise comment: “Go sweeper, go city.” Then both he and Callahan took turns at the controls of Madvac and did a little sweeping.

World Needs Rev. Sullivan’s Principles
Students from University of Pennsylvania recently joined those from Lehigh University for a forum at Packard Lab Auditorium. The topic: Global Sullivan Principles for Corporate Social Responsibility and Globalization. The Priniciples are named for Rev. Dr. Leon Howard Sullivan, who founded the Opportunities Industrialization Centers in an abandoned jailhouse in 1964. Sullivan's principles — condensed to eight sentences — include these standards: express support of human rights; equal opportunity; respect for freedom of association; pay workers for at least their basic needs; keep a safe workplace; no bribes; training for the disadvantaged; and demonstrate the principles publicly. The skills training program eventually reached 1.5 million people in 100 American cities and 12 African nations.

Democrats to Select Three Women, Two Men as Delegates
Linda J. Harbrecht, marketing communications manager in the University Relations department at Lehigh, is committed to John Kerry. Harbrecht's history of political involvement includes volunteering on George McGovern's presidential campaign. She has also worked on voter-registration drives. “I'm really committed and really passionate,” Harbrecht said. “Being uninvolved and uninformed is a luxury we can't afford anymore.”

Rendell’s Visit to Valley Will Bring Two Announcements
Gov. Ed Rendell will make two ''significant'' announcements about economic development when he visits the Lehigh Valley today, according to the governor's office. Rendell will be accompanied by Dennis Yablonsky, the state's secretary of community and economic development. Rendell's visit to OraSure will promote his billion-dollar economic stimulus package that would fund Keystone Innovation Zones (KIZ), like the one proposed in south Bethlehem. The zones would provide tax breaks and other incentives to high-tech and biotech businesses that open around hospitals and universities. Officials from the Ben Franklin Partnership, Lehigh University and the city are expected to apply for the designation, according to Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan. “You get priority status for state funding if the project is within a KIZ,” Callahan said. “It once again demonstrates the governor's awareness of Bethlehem and the good things we're doing here.”
