Allen, Warner Perform with Lehigh Philharmonic
The Lehigh University Philharmonic Orchestra is now the largest orchestral ensemble in the Lehigh Valley. Founded a decade ago by violinist Paul Hsun-Ling Chou of Lehigh's music department, the progress of the Philharmonic has surpassed all expectations. It performs several times a year at Zoellner Arts Center and has toured abroad, most recently in Brazil. The Philharmonic has given Valley audiences yet another opportunity to hear good music, and it has allowed non-music Lehigh students to develop their musical talents. The Philharmonic concludes its 10th season Friday and Saturday at Zoellner Arts Center.

Lehigh Readies Bazaar of Cultures
Lehigh Valley residents will taste the flavors of Turkey, India and Mexico from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the 17th annual Lehigh University International Bazaar. Sampling food from more than 20 countries is always the most popular event at the spring showcase, said Bill Hunter, director of the Office of International Students and Scholars at Lehigh. But it's only one of the attractions that has, in the past, brought almost 1,000 people to celebrate diversity. The event is organized by international students who wish to share their home cultures and traditions with the Lehigh Valley. But the name, International Bazaar, is a misnomer, Hunter said, because many American students are involved in its planning. ''It's a coming together of all races, creeds and nationalities for one tremendous celebration of diversity,'' he said. The International Bazaar is sponsored by Global Horizons, an Allentown organization that teaches foreign languages to children.

Rev. Lloyd Steffen, university chaplain and professor of religion at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about marketing of Christian symbols. Those people concerned about high culture may look down at it and say it's not Michelangelo, but that's not how real ordinary people experience their religious life, he says. Group to Use Education to Spur Fiscal Growth
Lehigh University, Lafayette College, Muhlenberg College, and Lehigh and Northampton community colleges are all partners in a new initiative that will market the Lehigh Valley as a higher education destination. Called College Valley, the nonprofit group has partnered nine schools, city and county administrations, tourism officials and economic development groups with the express goal of attracting and retaining students and their revenue.

Of Bandwidth and Wastefulness
Thomas L. Koch, director of the Center for Optical Technology at Lehigh, was guest speaker at the Lehigh Valley Engineering Council’s banquet on February 20, an occasion he used to rattle off a spate of Internet-related statistics. One was that by 2003, there were about 700 million Internet users, who made up 11% of the world’s population. “We’ve become a bandwidth culture,” Koch declared. “We have an insatiable appetite for bandwidth.” Koch added quickly that we also have an enormous “ability to waste it.”

Lehigh's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Lehigh Export Network at Lehigh University have announced that AccessEDocs of Allentown, was a recipient of the Governor’s Export Excellence Award. AccessEDocs is an ASP hosted document management and service portal, enhanced document access and delivery system. The SBDC is part of a non-profit, statewide organization that provides management counseling, technical assistance and educational opportunities for the Lehigh Valley business community.
