Stephen Thode, associate professor of finance professor at Lehigh, was quoted in another article about the spring real estate market. “People can't remember when housing prices actually fell ...so they think their downward risk is zero,” says Thode. The high end of the market is what worries him. Many baby boomers with huge houses today may find it difficult to resell if they decide to downsize. “Presumably they will sell them to 'echo boomers,' people their children's age,” he says, but those echo boomers may be shelling out so much for Social Security and Medicare taxes that there's not enough left over.

Nine Named Members of National Academy of Engineering
Shivaji Sircar, professor of practice in the chemical engineering department at Lehigh, recently received one of the highest honors accorded to engineers in the United States. Sircar was named a new member in the National Academy of Engineering for his contributions to the fundamental science and technology of adsorption separations and their applications in process industries.

Advances in electron microscopy at Lehigh are promising to shed light on the atoms of the nano-world that play a disproportionate role in the efficiency and safety of everyday materials. This spring, with support from the National Science Foundation, Lehigh will become the first university in the world to have two aberration-corrected electron microscopes. The new instruments will give scientists an ability they have long sought: to simultaneously image and determine the chemical identity of individual atoms in crystalline materials. “Electron microscopy helps us understand the microstructure and microchemistry of materials,” says David Williams, vice provost for research at Lehigh and a principal investigator on the microscope proposal. “Once we know those things, we can learn how to control the physical, mechanical, electronic and chemical properties of a material.”

Lehigh Valley Biz, a bi-monthly business magazine in the Lehigh Valley, ran an article in its April/May issue on nanotechnology, which was based on interviews with David Williams, vice provost for research, and Gene Lucadamo of the Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. The article described the promise of nanotechnology, some of the research projects underway at Lehigh, and the CAMN's regional nanotechnology network.

Pay Attention to Wind Power Debate
A letter to the editor addressed the lack of coverage from the Morning Call regarding the wind power debate at Lehigh. A concerned group of students have made a concerted effort to get wind power here, the author wrote. Currently, 37 universities in Pennsylvania use wind power and a school like Lehigh University, which is highly respected, should be a part of this effort. The Morning Call should support the group and show it cares about this effort, for the future of the community.

Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania, based at Lehigh, announced Monday $729,732 in new investments in companies, including two Bethlehem firms. Ben Franklin will lend $145,407 to Calcigen Corp. of Bethlehem. The agency will also invest $80,000 in PDV Software Inc. of Bethlehem. Ben Franklin is a public-private economic development agency that invests in startup companies and helps other companies remain competitive by improving their internal processes.
