TEMPO
The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science's Charting Horizons and Opportunities in Careers in Engineering and Science (CHOICES) program was featured on TEMPO, Lehigh Valley's #1 News Magazine Program, last night. TEMPO followed the 60 local middle school girls who participated in CHOICES for an entire day as they engaged in projects that hopefully sparked their interest in pursuing a career in science or engineering.

Ex-Banker is Shaking Up Steel
Mary Beth Deily, associate professor of economics at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about Wilbur L. Ross’s turnaround company. “I’m not a specialist in him personally. But in the steel industry, he’s having a major impact. I’d say the major impact is to increase the pressure on other firms, to win the types of concessions and new deals he’s been doing.”

Possible Steel Failure Probed as Ohio Crane Investigation Continues
Lehigh University’s Engineering Research Center for Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems was mentioned in an article about the collapse of a 2-million-lb. launching truss girder at the site of the Maumee River Bridge project. “We’re looking at many things – we’re taking samples of different parts of the truss and shipping them to Lehigh University for various kinds of testing to see if the steel was an issue,” says Joe Rutherford, spokesman for the Ohio Dept. of Transportation.

Volunteers to Tackle Trash on South Side
Residents and Lehigh University students clad in work clothes and armed with trash bags are set to scour the city Saturday morning for the annual South Side Cleanup. The cleanup is sponsored by the task force, the university's Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and the Bethlehem Department of Parks and Public Property. The kids from Lehigh have been a godsend to us. They've done a great job, Roger Hudak, chairman of the Mayor's South Side Task Force, said of Alpha Phi Omega members, who coordinated the meal, reserved the lot space and planned other event details. The main reason for this is to get a better understanding and a better sense of community between the Lehigh students and the city residents. We'll become more of a college town, he said.

Swipe-Card Program to Market Convenience to Students
In their quest to market the Lehigh Valley as a higher education destination, economic development officials are creating a program that makes it easier for students to spend money at other universities and surrounding businesses. The universal swipe-card program is part of College Valley, a marketing initiative that has partnered nine schools, city and county administrations, tourism officials and economic development groups with the express goal of attracting and retaining students and their revenue to the Lehigh Valley. Partnering colleges and universities include Lafayette College, Lehigh University and Cedar Crest College, as well as the Lehigh and Northampton Community Colleges.
