Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was interviewed on NPR's Morning Edition, discussing U.S. policy in Iraq. Barkey states that although he suspects timing of the June 30th turnover of power in Iraq is timed for the president's political campaign, he still thinks the U.S. should go through with it. Barkey's comments appear at roughly 1:20 minutes into the report:

Continued Violence in Iraq Threatens to Cast Pall over Handover of Power
Henri Barkey was also quoted in an article regarding the clashes between American forces and Sunni and Shiite insurgents. The transfer of power will happen as scheduled, but that the U.S. ambassador will be the de facto power, Barkey said. Not transferring power would undermine the president's claim of success. The June 30th deadline was an election year-tied date. Too much rides on keeping to the timetable…The challenge now, given the fighting, is to give more power to the [Governing Council] to make it more of a player so that an expanded [council] can take the country to elections in January.

Recently, my fellow collaborators (including Dr. Manoj Chaudhury at Lehigh University) and I have discovered that surfaces of soft solid films, such as rubber, become spontaneously rough when brought in contact with another solid surface, he wrote.

Muriel Mallin Berman dies at 89
Muriel Mallin Berman, 89, a prominent art collector, cultural philanthropist and civic steward, died Tuesday in her Allentown home. She was the widow of Philip I. Berman, her partner for 55 years in everything from a department store chain to educational ventures to placing strikingly contemporary sculpture around the world. Dr. Berman and her husband established the Philip and Muriel Berman Center for Jewish Studies, which administers and coordinates the Jewish Studies program at Lehigh, and placed numerous works of contemporary art throughout Lehigh's campus.

Want to know some gossip about Moliere or 17th-century French society? Ask the cast and crew of Lehigh University's ''The Misanthrope,'' which opens Friday at Zoellner Arts Center. Augustine Ripa, chair of the Department of Theatre, says the play is part of a semester-long project that has required the students to read and research 17th-century Paris, ballet, etiquette, the court of Louis XIV and the life of Moliere. ''This is a play about political correctness, and in those days people went to extremes in their costumes and more particularly in their wigs, says Ripa. Some of the wigs in the plays are pretty out there.''

Applied to roads, Bush's school fix wouldn't fill potholes
Robert L. Leight, a retired professor of education at Lehigh and a member of the school board of the Quakertown Community School District, wrote an Op Ed on the need for more government support for schools. Immigrants who have not had an opportunity to learn English have only one year to learn the language before they have to take a state test. Students with disabilities take the same tests as those without, he pointed out. In 2014 there will still be poverty and broken homes, when the possibility of children having a quiet place to study and parents who monitor their schoolwork and encourage the children to achieve will still be an illusion.

Lehigh's men's lacrosse team was reviewed on NavySports.com. Lehigh is 3-8 this season with a 1-3 mark in the Patriot League ... the Mountain Hawks are fifth in the league with an 8.55 goals-against average and are seventh in the conference in goals per game with a 7.55 average ...the schools played each other 17 times between 1910 and 1933, but did not square off again until the 2001 season.

Brong, who graduated from Lehigh with an undergraduate degree and Master's in industrial engineering. Brong, former vice president of a power-conversion equipment manufacturer in Bordentown, N.J., will begin his new job with the city April 26

The departure of a developer that wanted to tear down all but two of the former Bethlehem Steel's skyline-defining blast furnaces, and the involvement of city officials in discussions of adaptive reuses for the historic Steel buildings are giving members of Save Our Steel hope about the future of the south Bethlehem site. More than 40 people gathered in Lehigh University's Sinclair Auditorium to discuss the March 27 coalition workshop sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities of Rutgers University in Camden and the Historic Bethlehem Partnership.

Decision coming soon on Broughal school site
Bethlehem Area Superintendent of Schools Joseph A. Lewis said Tuesday he hopes a site for a new Broughal Middle School is nailed down in a month. The school district is currently looking at Lehigh University land for a new $35 million school. A year ago, the district was looking at former Bethlehem Steel Corp. land as the school's new site.
