Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article regarding the clashes between American forces and Sunni and Shiite insurgents. The transfer of power will happen as scheduled, but that the U.S. ambassador will be the de facto power, Barkey said. Not transferring power would undermine the president's claim of success. The June 30th deadline was an election year-tied date. Too much rides on keeping to the timetable…The challenge now, given the fighting, is to give more power to the [Governing Council] to make it more of a player so that an expanded [council] can take the country to elections in January.

DuPont to Cut 650 Jobs in Delaware, 3,500 Worldwide
John K. Smith, associate professor of history at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about DuPont cutting 650 jobs in Delaware in the coming months as part of a restructuring that will eliminate 3,500 jobs in North American and Europe. It's a difficult question when the main industry you're in is starting to peak, said Smith, who also co-wrote a 1989 book about DuPont, Science and Corporate Strategy. It's hard to see what they should have done and what they could have done that would have been different.

Vistacom Updates Image of Lehigh’s P.C. Rossin College
Vistacom Inc., a leader in audiovisual integration and design, along with Lehigh University and CICADA Architectural/Planning Inc. of Philadelphia, has transformed the image of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS). An interactive media wall is now the focal point of CEAS's lobby, showcasing the school's progressive education and research. The interactive display case, enclosed by liquid crystal glass, is comprised of a plasma screen, four touch screens, several web cameras and state-of-the-art gesture recognition technology. The touch screens allow visitors to navigate through several menus including event calendars and student information pertaining to the engineering department.

“Isms” and Theories that Grate on an Economist’s Mind
Eli Schwartz, professor emeritus of economics and finance at Lehigh, wrote an opinion piece on conspiracy theories, theocracy and economic protectionist policies. Conspiracy theories are useful to cast blame on others and to excuse one's own inadequacies. Simple, straightforward explanations never appease the conspiracy theorists; their world is ruled by secret, malevolent powers, he said.

Hamasaki Tosses No-Hitter in Win
Heather Hamasaki, freshman pitcher, Lehigh softball, threw her first collegiate no-hitter April 3 against host Lafayette. Hamasaki, a right-hander, struck out 14 and walked one in six innings to spark Lehigh to an 8-0 Patriot League win. It marked the third time this season that a Lehigh pitcher tossed a no-hitter.
