Why It’s Easy to Scam Good Guys
Michael J. Gill, an assistant professor of social psychology at Lehigh, was interviewed for a story on scam artists. “Most scam artists will not look like middle-class or upper-middle-class professionals,” Gill said. If someone seems nice and they're in need, we feel we should reciprocate. A lot of times we act according to a fairly unconscious, automatic script, and scam artists take advantage of that. Until you've been taken in by it, you can't understand the power of it.”

Iraqi Kurds May Want to Go Their Own Way
Rajan Menon, professor of international relations at Lehigh, wrote an opinion piece stating that risking independence would be less perilous for the Iraqi Kurds than the mayhem of civil war. “The key to Iraq's future is not its rebellious Sunni center or its increasingly turbulent Shiite south; it's the relatively stable Kurdish north, the area where American policy has been most successful,” he wrote.

Series of U.S. Fumbles Blamed for Turmoil in Postwar Iraq
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about the array of challenges the United States now faces in Iraq. These challenges seem to have emerged almost overnight but are actually the accumulation of mistakes, miscalculations and missed opportunities since Saddam Hussein's government collapsed a year ago. “We kept thinking we could win against Sistani. We should have bit the bullet and held elections, but instead we dillied and dallied for such a long time thinking he would relent. We completely misunderstood,” said Barkey.

Web search expert Brian Davison, assistant professor of computer science and engineering at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about news sites. “It's a fun time right now in the search-engine market,” he said “You’ve got multiple big entities involved and trying to compete.” Most of the smaller companies have little chance to take substantial market share from the bigger players, but through their unique technologies and features, they may be able to influence the direction of the larger companies and the broader market, he said.

What is it you were really applying for? I don't believe there is a statistical correlation between happiness and productivity and whether you go to Harvard, Yale or Lehigh.”

“Globalization of trade is a good force in the world,” former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo told an audience of 250 people at Lehigh University on Thursday evening in Zoellner Arts Center. “Overwhelming evidence exists for the good of globalization. It reduces poverty, lowers prices for consumers, raises average wages, and minimizes the chance for conflict between countries.” He was brought to Lehigh's campus for the 18th annual Cohen International Relations Lecture.

Young Activists Hope Their Presence Makes a Difference in Races of ‘04
Since Bush took office, Matt Salner, the 22-year-old former president of Lehigh University's College Democrats, has become keenly aware of how politics impact his life. On April 25, he'll travel to Washington, D.C., for the March for Women's Lives, not only to support reproductive freedoms, but also to highlight citizens' rights to health care, civil liberties and higher education. “That whole 2000 election made me more aware and interested in the process,” said Salner.
