Ooi named a SPIE Fellow

Boon S. Ooi, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named a Fellow of SPIE, one of the world’s premier organizations for scientists and engineers working in optical technologies. Ooi was honored at the SPIE Photonics West 2009, a major conference held in San Jose, Calif., and attended by more than 17,903 people on Jan. 26, 2009.
Ooi, who is affiliated with Lehigh’s Center for Optical Technologies, was cited for his achievements in developing integration technology for semiconductor photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
The technology developed by Ooi can enable the integration of multiple photonic components on a single semiconductor chip for important applications in optical telecommunication. His technology has also been used to make broadband emitters for biomedical imaging and sensor applications.
Ooi has earned international renown for his work with indium-phosphide and other semiconducting materials required to produce PICs. In 2007, he was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Physics for contributions to semiconductor photonics integration using quantum-well and quantum-dot intermixing.
Ooi and his group of graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral researchers have published 100 papers since Ooi joined the faculty in 2003. Half of these have appeared in journals and half in conference proceedings.
A total of 59 researchers from around the world were named SPIE Fellows this year. The organization was formerly known as the International Society for Optical Engineering.
SPIE Fellows, the group said in a press release, are SPIE members who have made “significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics and imaging.” Fellows are honored for technical achievement, service to the general optics community and service to SPIE.
More than 550 SPIE members have become Fellows since the Society's inception in 1955.
