MOMIX to bring lizards and tumbleweed to Zoellner
Defying categorization as dancers, gymnastics or acrobats, MOMIX, a company of dancer-illusionists that is internationally known for its exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, will present Artistic Director Moses Pendleton’s Opus Cactus, inspired by the American Southwest, at 8 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 22 in Zoellner’s Baker Hall.
In Opus Cactus, dancers are transformed in desert inhabitants from cacti to lizards to flowers to tumbleweeds in ingenious uses of the body. “Inspired by the flora, fauna and simple magic of the American Southwest, Pendleton’s ingenuity, theatricality and cunning imagination are seen at full stretch in strange vignettes of the Sonoran desert,…brilliant” (The New York Times).
In conjunction with the 8 p.m. performance, the public is cordially invited to attend a free pre-show talk by Kathryn Williams Craft, a former dancer, choreographer, teacher, critic and arts journalist for The Morning Call.
For 22 years, the MOMIX has created surrealistic images, using props, light, shadow, humor and the body. In addition to stage performances worldwide, the company has frequently worked on special projects and in film and television. MOMIX has made five Italian RAI television features, broadcast to 55 countries, including the former USSR and China, and performed throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia. The company was selected to represent the US at the European Cultural Center at Delphi, and was featured in PBS’s Dance in America series.
Artistic Director Moses Pendleton was one of the founding members of the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theatre in 1971. He has worked extensively in film, TV, opera and has choreographed for ballet companies and special events. He is the recipient of a 2002 American Choreography Award.
