Message from President Gast about the tragic events at Virginia Tech
On an unthinkable event occurred at Virginia Tech. The terrible tragedy that claimed the lives of more than 30 people and deeply affected colleagues, students and the entire campus community there has filled all of us at Lehigh with profound sorrow and heartbreak.
Together, we share in the grief of the Virginia Tech community and extend to them our deepest sympathy and condolences. They have experienced a loss of such magnitude that there are no words to express the deep sadness we feel.
On Lehigh’s campus, many of our community members are experiencing a range of emotions in the wake of such a profound and senseless act. I encourage all Lehigh family members to not only reassure one another at this time, but also to urge anyone who may be struggling to come to grips with this senseless act, to reach out for the help they need. For those on our campus, the University Counseling and Psychological Services (610-758-3880) and Dean of Students Offices (610-758-4159) can provide help.
I also want to assure you that nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our campus community. We are confident that our existing campus safety and community awareness programs make our campus as safe as possible. We are all taking the prudent step to once again review our plans in light of the events at Virginia Tech. Sadly, no community can be totally free of risk in today’s society; however, together as a community, we can work in partnership to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff members.
As we go about our day and week, our thoughts and prayers will remain with the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities and the families of those who have lost loved ones.
