Message from Mohamed El-Aasser and Margaret Plympton – January 12, 2006
Many months have passed since Hurricane Katrina tragically impacted the lives of so many throughout the Gulf Coast. During this difficult period, we have remained proud of the activities organized by Lehigh faculty, staff and students to contribute their time, effort and financial resources to support Hurricane Katrina victims.
In addition, the Lehigh community has continued to find intellectual opportunities in which to engage with the many environmental, engineering, policy, and humanistic issues that such a national event raises. You can read more about these on the Katrina Response Web site.
We continue to encourage your on-going support of national relief efforts through the Red Cross and other organizations. Full recovery of the Gulf Coast will require each of us to retain the capacity to provide assistance for a long time to come. To further assist with ongoing recovery efforts, President Farrington has announced that the university’s paid leave policy has been extended until Dec. 31, 2006.
Lehigh faculty and staff interested in volunteering for organizations involved in hurricane relief efforts may be granted a total of 15 consecutive working days (up to three consecutive weeks) of paid administrative leave. You can read complete details of the policy on here.
Keep in mind that the decision to grant release time is at the sole discretion of the academic department chairperson or the employee’s supervisor. The provisions outlined in the policy will apply to time away from work up to and including Dec. 31, 2006. Based on facts and circumstances, these provisions may be modified at a future date.
Faculty who are interested in this program may contact Carl Moses in the Office of the Provost and staff may contact Toni Lee Febbo in the Office of Human Resources.
