Message from the Dean (December 2004/January 2005)
Welcome to the December 2004/January 2005 edition of Enginews, the monthly online newsletter of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.
It is a great honor and privilege for me to greet you as the new dean of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. In the past few weeks, I have received great support and encouragement from colleagues here on campus and all over the country. I am moved by the overwhelming support and humbled to be entrusted with the leadership of one of the finest engineering colleges in the U.S.
As dean, I look forward to working with you to take Lehigh engineering to a new level of excellence and international renown. Over the next few months, I will talk in greater detail about our plans for the future - about making Lehigh engineering education truly distinctive and unique, promoting world class research and scholarship programs, and creating innovative multidisciplinary programs that prepare students for careers not only in engineering but in business, law, design, and medicine.
For now, I would like to reiterate my fundamental vision for the college, and that is that people are the core of what we are all about. As we work to advance the RCEAS, we must never forget that our ultimate mission is to cultivate a dynamic and intellectually powerful environment for students, for faculty, and for staff. I believe strongly that such an environment is the soul of all great institutions. It creates an electrifying aura of imagination, creativity, and curiosity, and it conveys the message that great talents and bright minds flourish at Lehigh.
As you know, I come to the deanship from the department of industrial and systems engineering, where I served as chair for six years. I was fortunate in the ISE department to work with talented and dedicated students, faculty and staff. We drew energy from each other and shared in each other's successes. Now, as dean, I know once again that everything I will plan and do will be possible only through all of you.
Once more, my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your support and trust.
