In memoriam: B.K. Ghosh
B.K. Ghosh, professor emeritus of mathematics, will be honored at a memorial service this coming Saturday, August 9, at Lehigh University in the Tower Room of Iacocca Hall. The service will begin at 2 p.m.
Bhaskar K. Ghosh—known to Lehigh colleagues as “Kumar”—died on August 3 at the age of 72 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of the late Hedwig (Graf) Ghosh, who died on June 10, 2007.
“My wife always thought him to be one of the last of the true gentlemen professors,” says Wei-Min Huang, professor and chair of the mathematics department at Lehigh. “He was truly blessed with both intelligence and the grace of the last generation of academics. It was an honor to have known Kumar, and I hope that he will be remembered for both his academic accomplishments and for being a friend to all.”
Ghosh will be honored for his “rare and noble contribution” to the mathematics department, and for service as a “magnificent department chair, researcher, teacher and friend,” adds Huang, who credits Ghosh with guiding him through the tenure process.
Ghosh was as a professor of mathematics at Lehigh from 1961 to 2005, serving as chair of the department from 1981 to 1985. He also was an assistant professor at the University of London, and a visiting professor at both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Virginia Tech.
Born in India, he earned his bachelors of science degree in statistics from the University of Calcutta in 1955, and his Ph.D. in mathematical statistics from the University of London in 1959.
He was an elected fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and was the author of numerous papers and publications, including the book, “Sequential Tests of Statistical Hypotheses” (Addison-Wesley Publishing), in 1970.
He is survived by his daughters, Monica of Atlanta, Ga.; Anita of Arlington, Va.; and Rebecca of Seattle, Wash.
